Among the most enigmatic and original marques in the history of the automobile is Bugatti – a name that is synonymous with excellence. The pinnacle of Bugatti’s road car production was the Type 57S, which debuted in 1936. With its “S” designation standing for surbaissé, or lowered, this radical new model took inspiration from the Type 59 Grand Prix and was developed as an uncompromising high-performance machine – lighter, faster, and more technically advanced than the already superb Type 57. This Type 57S, chassis 57502, is one of only 17 examples originally fashioned with Jean Bugatti’s sensational Atalante coachwork. Upon completion in May 1937, it was delivered to Earl Howe, the legendary racing driver and president of the Bugatti Owners’ Club (BOC). Finished in his preferred livery and outfitted with bespoke features, Howe’s beautiful new Bugatti soon became a familiar sight in the paddocks of major British circuits and at BOC meets. Following Howe’s ownership, the Bugatti passed through the hands of several English enthusiasts and tinkerers including John Tingay, who fitted a Marshall supercharger in the late 1940s. Acquired in “garage find” condition by the current owner, this magnificent Bugatti has since been treated to a subtle yet thorough restoration by marque expert Ivan Dutton Ltd. This Atalante possesses a history unlike any other Type 57S. It has led a truly fantastic journey, from the prized possession of a motor racing icon in the 1930s to a tinkerer’s pet project in the 1950s, followed by its decades-long descent into oblivion and recent joyful rescue from it. *Gooding provides information regarding the registration and import status of each lot as a helpful reference.
