1974 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000

Stunning restoration of the iconic GTV with the most powerful 2-liter engine and the last year for California Smog exemption.

This beautiful GTV Coupe offers all of the most desirable features and specifications of the long series production of this iconic model. The GTV 2000 was the final evolution of the Giulia Sprint GT introduced in 1963. This example was discovered by our team in Italy in very good overall condition cosmetically and mechanically. The body was straight and sound, no evidence of any prior damage and very little rust. Original mileage is 53 K. Our goal was to create an exceptional example and we proceeded to go thru the entire car to raise the already high standard of finish and condition to a Concours level.

This car was originally delivered to the German market and, as a European model, is fitted with dual Dellorto carburetors. As a 1974 model it is also exempt from California smog testing, which is a very important point. Overall condition is outstanding and very original.

Our reconditioning process included a comprehensive chassis inspection and professional treatment of all minor rust issues in the wheel arches, doors, front fenders and frame bracing. We then removed the engine, transmission and all glass prior to a total repaint in the original shade of Verde Muschio Chiaro. Body reassembly included new window gaskets and door seals as necessary. The underside of the body was cleaned to bare metal, prepped and undercoated. All noise insulation has been replaced. The entire engine bay was also painted and thoroughly detailed.

The exterior now shows to a near Concours standard. All trim, bumpers and badges are in excellent condition. Paintwork is smooth, lustrous and flawless.

The interior features the original high quality vinyl upholstery in the rich Cinghiale Maremma shade. A thorough cleaning, waxing and detail operation was performed and all aspects of the dash, door panels, seats and carpets now show to a high standard. The original attractive wood-rimmed wheel features attractive alloy spokes and horn buttons. A period audio system with cassette looks right at home in the woodgrain-accented dashboard. Alfa’s trademark tall shift lever handles the selection chores for the 5-speed gearbox admirably. All pedals were removed, lubricated and refitted.

While the engine and transmission were out of the car they were fully inspected, all oil leaks and gasket issues addressed, and the units cleaned and detailed. Engine compression and oil pressure are very good, as expected given the low original mileage. Prior to reinstallation new motor mounts and a new driveshaft guibo were installed. The clutch is new, master cylinder is new and all hydraulic system hoses have been replaced. The oil pan protector was newly anodized. Rear axle and differential fully disassembled and fitted with new wheel bearings, bushings and seals. Engine, gear and differential oils, brake fluid, antifreeze have all been renewed. Mechanically the engine, clutch, transmission and chassis, as well as all related components, now present impeccably and operate flawlessly.

The entire electrical system has been inspected, tested and repaired as necessary.

The suspension has been lowered 30mm and fitted with adjustable performance shocks. The original 14” alloy “Turbine” style wheels and 195/65R14 tires are included in the sale. For optimum handling we can offer a set of new GTA style 15” alloy rims fitted with low profile 205/50R15 Toyo Proxes tires at additional cost .. please inquire.

All aspects of the driving experience are outstanding. This Alfa Romeo coupe delivers all of the excitement and nuance for which the late series GTV is noted. The delightful chassis responds crisply to the accurate steering, the ride is supple and composed, the brakes are smooth and powerful and the engine sings a pleasant note with each snap of the gearshift. No issues, no problems, all lightness and joy on the road.

A1 in all regards. Very desirable model and year, professional and thorough refit of an essentially excellent example with low original miles and virtually no rust. Stunning color combination with a beautiful body and interior. A very fine example of the type, sure to delight any Alfa Romeo enthusiast for years to come.

MODEL HISTORY : Alfa Romeo GTV 2000

Introduced in 1963 as the successor series to the Giulietta Sprint Coupe, the Giulia Sprint GT was a sensation when introduced and remains a very desirable collector car today. The top of the line model was introduced with a 1600 cc version of the legendary Alfa Romeo DOHC engine.

The styling was done by Giorgetto Guigiaro for Bertone and these are still considered some of the most handsome 4-passenger GT coupes ever designed. Variants of the top of the line model were in production over 13 years. There were five distinct series produced with the GTV 2000 being the final evolution of the model. Most significant revisions came with the 1750 model introduced in 1967. In addition to the larger engine, the chassis was retuned to deliver better handling and braking. Detail changes and revisions to both the styling and engineering were incorporated. The bodywork was slightly modified and the the unique “Stepnose” configuration in which the front edge of the hood sits above an indentation in the grille surround was replaced with a smooth hoodline. Introduced in 1971 the GTV 2000 offered another increase in engine displacement and power along with a mild freshening of the styling. An attractive new grille featuring chrome bars was introduced and the interior dash and trim redone. US market GTV featured Spica fuel injection to meet tightening emissions rules. The 1974 model was the last one officially imported into the US as the GTV was unable to meet 1975 safety regulations.

In recent years the appeal and collectability of the Alfa Romeo GTV have increased considerably. Market values for the model, and especially so for clean rust-free examples have risen dramatically.
