The prototype 6CM, chassis number 1531, was delivered to the new President of the Maserati factory Gino Rovere on the 8th of April just in time for him to drive the car in the Monaco Grand Prix races and thereafter entrust the car to his great friend the Count Felice Trossi.
Trossi’s first outing with the new works prepared car was the Eifelrennen race at the Nuerburgring.
The 6CM proved invincible and Trossi came in 1st, against the strong ERA works team and went on to win the Italian 1500cc Championship for 1936, mostly driving chassis number 1531.
Chassis number 1531. The works prototype car, owned by the company President, was naturally up rated with a revised 4 – cylinder engine numbered 1554 presumed to have been taken in exchange from semi works – driver Armand Hug for a 4CL unit and the original 6CM chassis plate mounted on the instrument panel was over stamped 4CM.
After the cessation of hostilities in 1946 the car was sold to the young American privateer entrant Harry Schell and campaigned by him throughout the season, selling in via Sen Colombelli in 1948 to Arthur Legat. Thereafter the car passed through the hands of a number of private enthusiasts before the current owner purchased it in remarkably condition.
