Known History

This car, first delivered on 5 December 1957 in Bordeaux as indicated on the delivery note, has had very few owners during its lifetime.

In 1991, following the death of the first owner, this superb 300 SL roadster was put on display at the La Réole museum, near Bordeaux. It was registered 300 KR 33 at that time, and remained static in the museum for over ten years. The second owner acquired the car in July 2003, when the mileage stood at 92 445 km and the registration changed to 5000 TL 47 on 6 August 2003. Major work was then carried out, including restoration of the body and paintwork, and mechanical repairs to the cooling system, fuel supply, the injection pump, electrical circuit and brakes. An appraisal made at this time by M. Conti (available in the file with the car), concluded that it was in very good overall condition and respected the original presentation perfectly. The roadster changed hands next in August 2006, via a dealer from Toulouse, joining the garage of the new owner, Mr P. L. The mileage was then at 93 673 km and the car was duly registered 264 EX 92. Already owning several Mercedes, Mr L. used this car for a few club outings before deciding to have it fully restored by Alain Bourgeois (AB Racing), and the work was carried out under the direction of G. Paillet (Atelier SL). The project required more time than anticipated and due to ill health, the owner decided to sell his 300 SL to the current owner in July 2010. The mileage was 98 433 km at this point and on 22 March 2011 the car was re-registered BK 147 SL. The restoration work continued and a set of luggage for the boot was made specially using period designs. The restoration included a complete mechanical overhaul. The engine was dismantled and rebuilt using new pistons, rocker arms and valves. The crankshaft was rebalanced, and the engine was given a new cylinder head with refurbished camshafts and injection pump. The gearbox, axle and front and rear brakes were also completely refurbished.

It is interesting to note that the central dial for the water temperature and fuel gauge was sent to a professional and the bill for this alone was 10 000 € ! Completed in September 2017, this exhaustive restoration was documented in a series of invoices that can be seen in the extensive history file that accompanies the car. The paintwork, re-done to a high standard in its original colour some thirty years ago, has been well conserved. The red leather interior has also been well maintained and carefully cleaned by Paris Pagode who have done a remarkable job to retain its lovely patina. The carpets and the hood have been replaced, respecting the original Mercedes specification. At the end of 2017, this Roadster made two trips to Normandy and the Paris region, before it was taken to the Lecoq workshops to have a tracker and an immobiliser fitted.

It was then used for a few outings and passed the 100 000 km mark on 5 April 2018. A full service was carried out in January 2020 by AB Racing and, in June 2020, the mats were replaced and the leatherwork cleaned by Paris Pagode.

To conclude, this is a car of the highest quality, sold new in France, that has kept all its major original components: engine, gearbox, front and rear axles and coachwork. It has benefitted from a high standard of mechanical and cosmetic work to the body and interior, and has been maintained regularly and meticulously. It is a 300 SL with 100% French history, and is presented in outstanding condition, in a colour that is particularly suited to this exceptional Mercedes: silver grey with red leather interior.

Running perfectly, it is ready to take to the road to allow its new owner to enjoy its legendary 6-cylinder, 3-litre engine.
