Known History

Sold new in 1980, this Renault 5 Turbo spent time during the 2000s in England, where the engine was rebuilt by a specialist. Its current owner acquired the car in 2014, when it was in reasonable condition but no longer in its original colour.

A historic racer (in the Coupe Caterham) and a demanding collector, the new owner wanted his R5 Turbo to be perfectly restored to its original specification. In 2016, he therefore embarked on a top-flight restoration with the leading specialists in the model and tracked down the correct parts, most of them sourced from 3S Développement. The engine and gearbox were removed and overhauled by Stéphane Poudrel. The turbo and injectors were replaced. The body was sound and was repainted in its original shade of red, typical of the model. The wheels were refurbished by a specialist and all the trim parts and accessories were repaired or replaced as necessary. The interior was restored by Les Selliers du Domaine in Courtenay and now has the delightfully kitsch look of the first version of the R5 Turbo, with its distinctive seats and combination of bright red and electric blue. The steering wheel with its two L-shaped spokes is to the original specification.

During the restoration, some minor faults associated with the model were corrected, while maintaining at all times a concern for originality.

In 2020, the injection system was checked and adjusted on the bench. Since its last safety inspection, the car has covered less than 1000 km (620 miles) and is close to the condition in which it rolled off the assembly line. A true “pocket rocket”, it is ready to provide its new owner with the thrills so typical of the model.
