Known History

Our Renault 5 Turbo 2 has a rather moving and remarkable history. First registered on 13 June 1985, undoubtedly in the Sarthe, it is one of the limited series of 200 “customer“ cars with the model designation 8221, as stipulated in the regulations then in force for the R5 Maxi Turbo to be homologated for competition. The stroke was increased, taking the engine capacity from 1397 to 1432 cc, while some body panels such as the roof were made from aluminium.

This Turbo 2 was purchased in July 1988 with 38,000 km on the clock by a true enthusiast for the model. He used it daily until 1991, when a mechanical failure led to it being laid up for 24 years, as he lacked the funds to repair it. Properly stored in the dry throughout this time, the complete overhaul of the engine to as-new condition began in 2015, as the bills and photographs show. Some technical modifications were made at this time to improve the car's reliability. Its original sand-coloured upholstery is in reasonable shape, while its body - still in its original “Cognac“ colour - is in consistent overall condition, albeit with some defects due to its age. The tyres will need to be replaced and the lock barrel on the left-hand door has been forced. After being repaired, the car once again delighted its owner, who sadly died in 2019. With just over 62,000 km recorded today and 1000 km or so since the engine rebuild, this rare 8221-series model has been carefully looked after for more than 32 years. It represents an opportunity to acquire one of the most legendary French sporting cars of the 1980s with a clear history. It will also be supplied with a folder of bills and photographs, together with a valuation report from 2019.
