Known History

This Mercedes 190SL has an unusual history, as it was delivered new in Mozambique and registered there on 19 August 1956, as its original logbook confirms. This precious document shows the car's various owners until 1983, when it was bought by a French expatriate who became attached to the car and had it imported into France in 1986. It subsequently remained in the Manche department and in the ownership of the same lady until 2011, as a substantial file of bills for service and other work confirms. We encourage enthusiasts to study this file: although the car has never undergone a full restoration, a good deal of work has been carried out to keep it on the road. In 1993, for example, an extensive overhaul included the replacement of the piston rings. The car was repainted in 1995 in an elegant shade of blue-grey, in which it was already finished when it arrived in France. The bodywork is sound, although the underbody shows some signs of the car's earlier life. The black leather upholstery is original, whereas the dashboard has been fitted with several non-original accessories, such as the steering wheel or instruments. The alpaca hood has been refurbished more recently and there is a small occasional seat in the back. We noted the absence of any heating system, certainly unnecessary in Mozambique. The owner confirmed that the car would be given a general service by Mercedes-Benz before the auction. With regular maintenance, the car may continue to be driven, but a demanding enthusiast may choose to restore the car to its former glory from 1956.
