Known History

The celebrated former vice-president of General Motors, John Z DeLorean, launched a car that carried his name, the DeLorean DMC 12, towards the end of the 1970s. But further down the road, allegations of management fraud and embezzlement caused it to fail. In the middle of this financial maelstrom, DeLorean was accused of trafficking cocaine. The slippery slope got steeper, and took him to prison. There, he found faith, before being acquitted of the charges against him...

This fascinating adventure only adds to the appeal of the car that lies at the heart of the story, particularly as it isn't without its own attractions. The restrained and sporty body was designed by Giugiaro and the stainless steel body mounted on a beam-chassis was undeniably original. Access to the cockpit was via gull-wing doors and the engine, positioned at the rear, was a V6 PRV 2.9-litre whose 137bhp could power the beauty to 200km/h. Somewhere between 8,000 and 9,000 examples of this avant-garde machine were produced, made famous by its starring role in the film 'Back to the Future'.

The DMC 12 in the sale has covered just 20 000 miles since leaving the factory! It belongs to one of today's most famous photographers who quite simply fell head over heels in love with the car when he saw it for sale with a collector from Monaco. Being such an iconic model, it appeals to enthusiasts of every generation, with a rare mechanical gearbox and its distinctive stainless steel body in excellent condition complete with 'gullwing' doors. The interior has been very well conserved and on close inspection it is clear that the car has been maintained to the highest standards. Here is a rare opportunity to acquire a well-preserved DMC 12 and become a member of the highly exclusive De Lorean club. It is a car that marked a generation and is likely to gain in popularity over the next few years. Available to buy now !
