The 810 was E.L. Cord’s second attempt at a front-wheel-drive automobile. Its engine was a V-8, also by Lycoming, but a four-speed, electrically shifted, pre-selector transmission was used. The body, designed by Gordon Buehrig, was a thing of beauty; such features as a “step-down” floor, unitary construction, hidden door hinges, and a total lack of running boards were all previously unheard of. The car’s reception at the November 1935 New York Auto Show was enthusiastic, with onlookers reportedly standing on the roofs of other cars just to catch a glimpse, and the orders poured in.

The 810 Phaeton offered here has been part of the Duane Sell Collection for many years. It wears the factory Auburn-Cord color of Rich Maroon, and is equipped with bumper guards and wide whitewall tires, as well as the desirable side exhaust later introduced for the 812 models, adding a distinctive sporty flair. The interior sports rich dark leather upholstery, overseen by a black convertible top, and is complete with an original Cord radio. Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club records note this front stub frame, engine, and serial number combination as having originally belonged to a Westchester sedan. It is believed that they were combined with this phaeton body, featuring its original Central Manufacturing body tag, and the serial number amended with the correct phaeton “H” suffix during restoration – something not uncommon in the Cord world.

The car is in overall very presentable, older restored condition and is offered with a full-size spare and original owner’s manual. It would be ideal for enjoying in ACD Club events and tours.

Every collection should have an 810 Cord, one of the great automotive design legends of American history. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/af20.
