The Porsche 356 was the model that started it all for Porsche. Whilst on a sabbatical in Stuttgart in June of 1962 the first owner ordered this wonderful vehicle. In September 1962 it arrived in Portland, Oregon, where it stayed until 1969. From 1969 to 2014 the car belonged to the second owner in British Columbia, Canada. Late in 2014 it was exported to the Netherlands to arrive on the doorstep of its third owner in 2015. From the very start this car was used properly and very well maintained. The complete service and maintenance details from 1962 onwards have been kept in an orderly fashion. The original manual, a brochure, colour swatches, photographic rapport and even the original registration documents, everything has been kept. On the surface it looked like the car was in fair condition when it arrived in the Netherlands in 2014. The new owner however did not see a fairly decent Porsche 356B, he saw a blanc canvas for a very high quality restoration. And boy, what a restoration it has become! The final result is stunning! Cliches occasionally just fit the load perfectly and the same goes for restoring a car. Get hold of the best car to start with. As mentioned above, this 356B was in a fair condition to start with although not in a premium state. To get the car up to a top-notch condition, as happened here, you really do need to roll your sleeves up,. The car was completely taken apart, the bodywork taken back to bare metal. In and outside out they made sure that the car had perfectly clean lines before it was re-sprayed in the original white colour. Panels were, where necessary, replaced or repaired and only new parts were used when reassembling the car. Meanwhile all mechanical aspects were fully seen to. The engine rightly deserves the love and attention it received. It happens to be the one and only engine ever associated with this particular car. This Porsche 356B does just look good, it also happens to have matching numbers. The interior trim was also completely re-upholstered. Cost nor effort was spared in bringing this Porsche 356B up to a better condition than it was when it initially left the factory in 1962. The final result is blindingly stunning! The paintwork has a perfect finish with no blemishes whatsoever. The Reuter bodywork is in very good condition with wonderful panel work and perfect shut lines. Perfection is to found underneath the car too. The interior is possibly even more beautiful, the dashboard has the same high quality finish as the exterior and all instruments are in correct working order. The black carpets and black leather upholstery can only be describes as pristine. This sense of perfection is only enhanced when driving this 356B. The car feels new. This Porsche 356B really knows how to deliver oodles of pleasure and subtle driving experience. Thanks to the addition of two K&N open-air filters this perfectly smooth running 4-cylinder Boxer engine produces a satisfying sound. The manual gearbox is a delight to operate. To quote another cliché regarding restorations: “It always takes longer and cost more than one thought at the beginning”. De Porsche 356 is het model waar het voor Porsche allemaal mee begon. Dit prachtige exemplaar werd in 1962 in juni door de eerste eigenaar in Stuttgart besteld terwijl hij op sabbatical was in Stuttgart. In september 1962 werd ze nieuw geleverd in Portland, Oregon. Daar verbleef de auto tot 1969. Van 1969 tot en met 2014 verbleef de auto bij de tweede eigenaar in Victoria in de staat British Columbia in Canada. Eind 2014 werd ze geëxporteerd naar Nederland alwaar zij in 2015 aan de derde eigenaar werd geleverd. De auto werd vanaf nieuw goed gebruikt en zeer goed onderhouden. De volledige onderhoudshistorie is sinds 1962 inzichtelijk en zeer uitgebreid gedocumenteerd. De originele handleiding, een brochure, kleurstalen, fotoreportage, alles is aanwezig. Zelfs de originele registratiebewijzen zijn bij de auto bewaard gebleven. Toen de auto eind 2014 naar Nederland kwam was ze op het oog in redelijke staat. De nieuwe eigenaar zag echter niet een Porsche 356B in redelijke staat maar een blank canvas, een perfecte basis voor een restauratie van zeer hoog niveau. Wat een restauratie is het geworden zeg. Het eindresultaat is prachtig! Clichés worden vaak clichés omdat ze waar zijn. Bij restaureren is dat niet anders. Pak de beste basis die je kunt vinden. Deze 356B was best aardig voordat er aan de restauratie werd begonnen, maar zeker niet in hele goede staat. Om een auto in zeer goede staat te krijgen moet je ook zeer uitgebreid te werk gaan. Dat is hier zeker gebeurd. De auto is volledig uit elkaar gegaan en de carrosserie is teruggebracht tot blank metaal. Zowel van binnen als van buiten is de auto helemaal strak gemaakt om vervolgens te worden gespoten in haar originele witte kleur. Al het plaatwerk is gerestaureerd en waar nodig werden reparaties uitgevoerd. Bij de opbouw werden louter nieuwe onderdelen gebruikt. Gelijktijdig werd de techniek aan een volledige revisie onderworpen. De motor verdient het ook om alle liefde en aandacht te krijgen. Het betreft namelijk de originele, eerste motor. Deze Porsche 356B is dus niet alleen prachtig om te zien maar is ook matching numbers. Bij het opbouwen van de auto is het interieur ook volledig opnieuw gestoffeerd. Kosten noch moeite zijn gespaard om deze Porsche 356B in een staat terug te brengen die beter is dan toen ze de fabriek verliet in 1962. Het resultaat is oogverblindend. De lak is in perfecte staat, volledig vrij van gebruikerssporen en zeer goed gespoten. De Reuter carrosserie verkeert in zeer goede conditie met prachtig plaatwerk en perfecte passingen. De onderzijde van de Porsche 356B is ook in perfecte staat. De binnenzijde is zo mogelijk nog mooier, het dashboard is net zo fraai gespoten als de buitenzijde en vanzelfsprekend functioneren alle tellers zoals het hoort. De zwarte tapijten en zwarte lederen bekleding kan alleen maar worden omschreven met: nieuwstaat. Tijdens het rijden wordt dat beeld alleen maar bevestigd. De auto voelt nieuw aan. Wat een genot, wat een sublieme rijbeleving weet deze Porsche 356B te leveren. De viercilinder Boxer motor loopt perfect en klinkt dankzij de montage van twee K&N openluchtfilters ook nog eens fantastisch. De handgeschakelde transmissie laat zich eenvoudig bedienen en schakelt heerlijk soepel. Een ander cliché omtrent restaureren is ook waar: het duurt altijd langer dan je denkt en uiteindelijk is het altijd duurder dan begroot. Dit is dé Porsche 356 voor de persoon die absoluut niet voor dat soort verrassingen wil komen te staan maar wel wil genieten van het eindresultaat.
