Jaguar Cars, as William Lyons' SS concern had been renamed in 1945, commenced post-war production with a range of essentially pre-war designs. A considerable improvement on what had gone before, the Mk. V saloon's cruciform-braced chassis featured torsion bar independent front suspension, designed pre-war by the company's Chief Engineer William Heynes, and all-round hydraulic brakes. Jaguar's existing standard based, six-cylinder, overhead-valve engine was continued in both 2½ and 3½ litre forms in the Mk. V, whose bodywork likewise maintained the pre-war tradition, though with minor up-dating in the form of faired-in headlamps, deeper bumpers and rear wheel spats. Like its immediate predecessor, the Mk. V was available in saloon or drophead coupé versions and featured the kind of luxuriously appointed interior that had become a Jaguar hallmark. The announcement of Jaguar's first new generation post-war saloon, the Mk. VII, at the 1950 Motor Show signalled the end for the Mk. V, production ceasing in June 1951 after slightly fewer than 10,500 had been built.
This Jaguar Mk. V has been part of a private collection for over four decades and comes with a sizeable history file detailing various maintenance work that has been completed over the years. Included in the file are various sundry invoices, photographs of the car and many previous MoT test certificates. Showing a mere 36,210 miles on the odometer the history file that accompanies the car suggests the mileage to be correct although it cannot be warranted. Offered in light blue over a grey leather interior, this Jaguar presents in generally very good order for a car of its age. The paintwork presents well but does show some minor defects in a few areas. The interior is nicely patinated and in largely very good condition having been dry stored for some time. Included in the sale is the original toolkit with most of the original tools present. This Jaguar is currently not running and will require some light recommissioning to get it back on the road. This is a very original example and it presents a fantastic opportunity to acquire a Mk. V that comes with a wonderful history.
