The model

The Mark VI, built by Bentley from 1946 to 1952, was the first model produced after the suspension of car manufacturing due to the Second World War. There was still the possibility of purchasing the simple "rolling chassis", then contacting your trusted coachbuilder, but this option was rarely chosen by customers and among the few custom-made bodies, the magnificent Park Ward convertibles stand out. The chassis took almost everything from the MKV: independent frontwheels, with coil springs and finally an X-shaped rinforcing structure in the centre. The chassis and engine were used as the basis for the 1946 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith and 1949 Silver Dawn. The engine was the B60, the son of that family of modular 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines (B40-B60-B80) born for military needs, for the powering of trucks, amphibians and generators. The old6-cylinderoverhead valve was replaced by this unit equipped with only the overhead intake valve and side exhaust. The first Mark VI models used a straight six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 4257 cm³. In1951, a 4566 cm³ engine capacity was introduced, always with the same configuration called "Big Bore". The Mark VI initially had a synchronized four-speed manual transmission, then the GM 400 RR automatic, produced by General Motors, became available on Rolls Royce specifications, the same gearbox that equipped the 3 versions of the Silver Cloud and went on up to the very first Silver Shadow. The typical centralized lubrication system was preserved, which allowed oil to reach the moving parts of the suspension from a central tank. The braking system was, for the first time, mixed, hydraulic on the front axle and mechanical on the rear, with the "old" brake booster under license from Hispano Suiza. The 4566 cm³ displacement version of the Bentley Mark VI was tested by the magazine "The Motor" in 1951. It reached a top speed of 160 km/h and accelerated from 0 to 60 mph (about 100 km/h) in 15 seconds. Fuel consumption was 17.4 litres per 100 km. The model used in the test cost £4473, including taxes. Sedan and convertible versions were produced. There were 4000 specimens equipped with the 4257 cm³ engine (832 with bodywork by external coachbuilders). The specimens equipped with the 4566 cm³ engine were 1202 (180 bodied by external coach builders).

The car

Bentley Mark VI 4.6, chassis no. B10PV is a model built in 1948. It comes from the cars chosen for the Saottini Collection. It mounts the more powerful "big bore" engine that allows it to perform brilliantly, despite its size. The car has a manual gearbox and is right-hand drive, it was registered in Italy in 2001. The car has been completely and correctly restored both outside and in including the leather and cabinet-making. The paint is two-tone gray/black, the interiors are in brown Connolly leather. The mechanical part is in excellent condition. The car appears to have driven approximatelyonly67,000 miles and is in perfect condition. 2nd classified at the Concours d’Elégance Trofeo Salvarola Terme and at the Bussolengo elegance contest. It appears on the DVD dedicated to Bentley, as part of the "Dream Car" series, produced by Gazzetta dello Sport in 2006.
