The model

The 600 was the first and most innovative model for Fiat, with the "tutto dietro" (all rear) mechanics. The work of Dante Giacosa, who was able to create a four-seater of reduced dimensions and cost able to replace the now elderly “Topolino”. It became "the car that put Italy on 4 wheels". The 600 was manufactured by Fiat between 1955 and 1970, by which time its replacement (the Fiat 850) had already been in production for six years. It was presented in March 1955 at the Geneva Motor Show and simultaneously in all European capitals as well as in Casablanca (Morocco). With the Fiat 600, joining the Fiat 1100 and 1400, the Torinese factory entered into production in large series. The Fiat 600 is a compact two-door sedan, with four comfortable seats, a self-supporting structure with the engine-clutch-gearbox-transmission and differential placed longitudinally, all positioned rearward with the engine cantilevered beyond the rear axle. It initially mounted an air-cooled 633 cc four-cylinder petrol engine, capable of developing 21.5 hp at 4,600 rpm. Gearbox was a 4-speed manual gearbox, with 1st gear not synchronized; rear-wheel drive. The 600’s engine could bring the 590-kg car to a top speed of over 95 km/h. Fiat had managed to maintain, for a four-seater of the time, modest proportions of the car. The car was 3,215 mm long, 1,380 mm wide and 1,405 mm high. It was produced by SEAT in Spain and by Zastava in Yugoslavia. In its long career three series follow one another until 1960, when the 600 model D was born, presenting the new 750 cc engine and will also evolve into three series until production ceased. The 600D I series, produced from September 1960 to April 1964, has a 767 cc engine, for 29 hp at 4,800 rpm, thanks to which it reaches a maximum speed of around 110 km/h. Despite the increase in power, gas mileage remains at 5.7 l per 100 km. Externally, it stands out for some details: on the engine hood the grilles go from 30 to 36 grooves, quarter windows appear on the doors which still remain “suicide doors”, being hinged at the rear.

The car

The Fiat 600, with chassis no. 100D*1439019 is a D specimen of the 1st series, and was registered new in Genoa on 4 February 1963. It still mounts the "suicide" doors, hinged at the rear, as was then stated in advertising notices, also to facilitate entry and 'dignified' outing for motorist ladies in skirts, a new and important user base for the model. The car went in the hands of its current and last owner in 1992, in a fully to be restored condition. The restoration was carried out by him with care and in depth. The body has been completely disassembled, every necessary part has been replaced with original parts and the body has been painted in the original Light Blue (403). The interiors were completely redone by an expert upholsterer with materials and striped fabric conforming to the time. The matching numbers mechanics have been totally revised. Although the restoration is not recent, its quality means that the car is in perfect condition. Tyres are new. There is a curious option on the steering wheel: the ring for flashing with the headlights. The car has original Genoa black plates and the original registration document, “in pages”. The equipment is completed by the use and maintenance booklet of the time.
