It was during the war that Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche and a handful of loyal employees began to develop the 356 in their workshop, a former sawmill in Gmünd in Carinthia, Austria. The first sketches were completed on July 17, 1947, and on June 8, 1947, the Carinthian government issued a special permit for the homologation of the car.
Historically, the Porsche 356 was the first sports car manufactured and marketed by Porsche. Conceived by Ferry Porsche on the mechanical basis of the Volkswagen and designed by Erwin Komenda, it will be mass produced from 1948 to 1965.

Technically, it is a monocoque with four independent wheels and a flat four-cylinder engine in rear overhang. Production of the 356 lasted more than 17 years, with 78,000 units produced. Originally, the 356 was available as a Coupé and Cabriolet, then at the request of Hoffmann, the American importer, a Speedster version was created in 1954! The latter was replaced in 1958 by the Convertible D built by the Drauz body shop. This one will be produced only one year and will include some comfort features compared to the Speedster but will keep the line so characteristic that made the success of the speedster. For the 1960 vintage, Porsche modernizes its 356 with the appearance of the 356B model, and the Convertible D disappears in favor of the Roadster, which retains its elegant low windshield. First built by Drauz in Germany, it was then built by d'Ieteren in Belgium for the 1961 millesime.

This car left the factory on December 18, 1959. It is one of the very first Drauz Roadsters produced. It will be delivered in the USA to Mr J.F. Lipman, living at Los Altos Hills California in its Silbermetallic (aluminum grey) livery. It has spent much of its life in the United States where its current owner, regularly working in California purchased the car 35 years ago and used it as his daily driver! Soon he had a 616/2 engine prepared with a Porsche 4-in-1 rally exhaust. In order to follow the trend of the small US racers, he added a very rare Glasspar hard-top, Speedster seats, Nardi steering wheel, Fuchs rims and the characteristic small bumpers. All original parts (engine, steering wheel, rims) are of course kept and delivered with the car as well as the soft top, a tonneau cover and a luggage rack.

Behind the wheel, this Porsche 356 Roadster is very pleasant to drive. The quality of its construction is still there, no part seems to have play or vibrations, not even on paved roads. The prepared 1750 cc engine is in very good working order, proof of the care taken by its owner for 35 years ow. The Porsche certificate of authenticity tells us that the original 85210 engine corresponds to chassis number 87189. The car is registered as “veteran” in Switzerland. With a superb patina, equipped with rare period accessories and offering a remarkable driving pleasure, it is the perfect car for your next rally!
