Known History

In the 1970s, the 450 SEL represented Mercedes' absolute flagship, just behind the 600. It was based on the W116 S-Class long wheelbase chassis, launched in 1972. Powered by a huge 6.9-liter V8 developing 286bhp, combined with hydro-pneumatic suspension, the 450 SEL was an extraordinary luxury limousine, with performance worthy of a sports car. The car on offer was acquired by the father of the current owner in 1977, in all likelihood, the year after it was registered. Unused for several years, and in average aesthetic condition, it was the son who undertook the restoration of the car, in 2018. It is therefore truly a family car. The owner first tackled the body, which was stripped for anti-corrosion treatment before painting and the replacement of the sills, which had suffered from the daily use of this sedan on Belgian roads. Subsequently, the mechanicals were serviced and the front suspension, as well as the steering, redone, with the replacement of many parts. During this work, various elements such as seals, gaskets, glazing and exhaust were also changed. Although displaying a little over 197,000 km on the odometer, the car is thus in good overall condition. It now sports a beautiful white shade, which goes very well with its original blue velvet and leather interior, superbly preserved. As for the engine and transmission, the gigantic torque of this limousine remains very impressive. Benefiting from the hydro-pneumatic suspension that characterizes this model, this car is also equipped with alloy rims, a sunroof, four electric windows, as well as air-conditioning (which will need to be recharged). In its typical 1970s configuration, this 450 SEL, just renovated for the bodywork, mechanically overhauled, and with an exceptional history, is a great opportunity to acquire a rare model, an icon of the pinnacle of German automobile production.
