Known History

This Mercedes 280 SE 3.5 was sold new to its first owner, Charles P. by the Mercedes dealer in Hollywood, California. He used it regularly to drive to his second home in Palm Springs. It was serviced by Mercedes Beverly Hills. He kept the car for 20 years and sold it to Dan P. from San Francisco with 34,000 miles recorded. Once again, the car was used very little, before crossing the Atlantic in 2007 to join a collection in Portugal. When it arrived at the Mercedes dealership in Porto, it was in excellent original condition with very sound bodywork that had no signs of corrosion or accident damage. The 3.5-litre engine was given a thorough service and any work needed carried out. However, Mr. B. did not like the car's original colour of tobacco brown and asked the dealer to have it resprayed in red! Its Portuguese owner kept the car for 10 years before selling it to its current owner, who had it repainted a very elegant silver grey. The body was then completely stripped and repainted to the highest standards, as was the underbody. Some 50 photos of this work are available, showing just how sound the bodywork is. The owner took the opportunity to have the car fully serviced by Mercedes, including having the brakes overhauled and five new tyres fitted. At the same time, it was also converted to European specifications. The engine and gearbox numbers tally with the chassis number, making it a 'matching numbers' car. This superb cabriolet starts and runs impeccably. Its odometer is currently showing 40,000 miles, which is undoubtedly original, given the condition of the interior. It has its original books and tools.

The 280 SE 3.5 cabriolet, styled by the French designer Paul Bracq, who was then working in Mercedes' styling department, represents the ultimate model in the W111 series and an icon in the tradition of Mercedes cabriolets. In addition, its comfort and reliability make it a classic which is easy to use in modern traffic and a top-class model for any collector!
