The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, together with the 300 SL, made history at the New York International Motor Sports Show in February, 1954 by being the first new production Mercedes- Benz to be unveiled outside of Germany. The impression given by the 190 SL, alongside the bigger 300 SL, was neat, sporty and with dashing lines. This was the trait of Mercedes-Benz designers Karl Wilfret and Walter Hacket. Despite opinions, the statistics tell their own tale as between May 1955 and February 1963, 25,881 of these cars were produced - it was a huge success for Mercedes-Benz. Its engine boasted four inline cylinders with a chain driven overhead camshaft and two Solex 44PHH carburettors delivering a respectable 108bhp for that era. The body was a monocoque design, welded to the shortened chassis of the type 180 saloon. A racing version with aluminium doors and a small windscreen was never produced although these parts could be ordered from the factory for weekend racing.
This charming 190 SL is a rare early car having been built in the third year of production in 1957 and first registered on the 1st January, 1958 to a Mr. Walter Perry of Whiteboro, New York. The car resided with him until 1990 where it was then sold to Mr David Levine of Great Neck, New York. The first UK owner purchased the car from David Levine via auction in the US before shipping and registering the car in the UK in 2016.
Previously valued at £125,000 by a London based classic car dealer the 190SL presents in good order throughout. Finished in white with a contrasting red interior with a black soft top the Mercedes has recently been the subject of much restoration work. Undertaken by Lux Classics Ltd in 2018 the work included bodywork and metalwork restoration and new panels as required, an all-new fuel system including a new fuel pump, filter and hoses. The suspension was also restored at this time including new shock absorbers and bushes as was the brake system which was treated to a new master cylinder. Once complete the underside of the car was lightly undersealed ready for use. Invoices of the restoration are documented in the history file and total over £34,000. In 2019 the car was once again the subject of further work. A new starter motor and a bottom end rebuild was undertaken by specialists Herts at a cost of circa £5,000 although, the vendor reports the relevant paperwork is not present with the car. More recently in October 2020 the current and fastidious owner commissioned Herts to once again refresh the 190SL. The car benefited from a respray as well and an extensive service including new plugs, fresh oil and an engine and carburettor tune up.
In good order throughout the coachwork is presented in splendid condition with very few blemishes to show. The chromework and fittings are also well and the interior including the seats and dashboard present very nicely show just a light patina from careful use.
Supplied with a sizeable history file detailing the previous restoration work, photographs of the restoration, various Mercedes-Benz instruction manuals, sundry invoices, and the UK registration document. We are advised by the vendor that this wonderfully presented example runs as it should and is a delight to drive. This most elegant of sporting tourers simply awaits its next custodian.
