275hp, 352 cu. in. overhead valve V8 engine, two four-barrel Rochester carburetors, Ultramatic Drive automatic transmission with overdrive, torsion bar self-leveling suspension, and power assisted four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 127"

For over 50 years, Packard had been one of America's top luxury car manufacturers, but all that would end in the late 1950s; the 1955-56 Caribbean Convertible would be Packard ĺ s last prestige, low production offering.

Completely redesigned, the top of the line 1955 Caribbean Convertible had a new high output overhead valve V8 engine with twin four-barrel carburetors, which produced an amazing 310 horsepower coupled to a new push- button Ultramatic Drive transmission. An innovative new torsion bar suspension featured automatic leveling, making the 1955 Packard the smoothest riding and best handling full size car of the time.

At $5,932, the car was breathtaking in more ways than one, yet Packard only built 500 examples, making the convertible presented here (number 220) a very rare Caribbean. The convertible was a special order from the Packard Dealership of Scottsbluff, Nebraska by a local physician, Dr. Joe T. Hanna, as a present for his wife ĺ s the 50th birthday. The car was sold back to the dealer in Scottsbluff where it stayed on the showroom floor for over 25 years.

In July of 1986, Mr. John J. Lee of Roslyn, SD purchased the Packard. Four years later, Mr. Lee drove the Caribbean from South Dakota to Phoenix, AZ where for the next 14 years he would use it as his daily driver while wintering in Arizona. Mr. Lee sold the car in 2004 to the current owner, at which point the odometer indicated approximately 62,000 miles.

In its latest ownership, the Caribbean was treated to a complete 18 month 1,500 man-hour cosmetic, mechanical and electrical restoration performed by SELCO Restorations of Richmond, Texas. Throughout the restoration NOS parts were used whenever possible. The body was completely stripped, prepped and finished before being repainted in the correct 1955 Packard White Jade, turquoise, and Pearl Gray three-tone color scheme. The engine and carburetors were rebuilt, as were the power steering and power brake pumps. The interior was totally replaced with new matching leather, while the original dashboard pad was saved. The trunk was fitted with all new material and the convertible top was replaced.

The Packard is in excellent overall condition and shows beautifully, having only been driven approximately 250 miles since completing its restoration. This 1955 Caribbean Convertible, highly collectable and in such fine condition, will undoubtedly continue to appreciate in both value and desirability over time.
