In 1953 the VW received a series of upgrades including a single oval-shaped rear window, vent window lock buttons, taller fuel filler hose, 8 leaf torsion bar tubes and chromed ash trays. The raised production was met with the manufacturing of the 500000th VW beetle on July. Of the 151323 vehicles made that year, only 4170 Cabriolets were built of which only 16 were finished in the most elegant shade of Maroon.
According to factory records the Cabriolet offered was built on the 17th of July 1953 on Osnabrueck, Germany in Maroon over Beige leatherette and beige-rose soft top and then dispatched to Athens, Greece. Its story remained largely unknown up till the year 2017 when it was discovered in barnfind condition by a VW Typ 15 collector. Soon after a no-expense-spared restoration was undertaken to return the Cabriolet to its factory specifications including colours, materials and options. A type and year-correct early 1953 Type 122 VW flat 4 cyl. industrial engine was sourced, overhauled and fitted. Upon completion of the restoration, the Cabriolet was driven 50 km to local private routes for display as well as testing of all mechanical components.
