The 4 ╝ litre Bentley was the last of the 'Rolls-Bentley' sporting cars built in the 1930's. Although by the time it appeared, W.O. Bentley himself had left the company to head design at Lagonda, the overall design followed the principles he had laid down. Bentley's company had been taken over by Rolls Royce in 1931 (some say to stifle the 8.0 litre Bentley which promised to be stiff opposition) and 'W.O.' was retained to supervise a new range of cars which combined Rolls-Royce components with Bentley's sporting values. The result was advertised as 'The Silent Sports Car'. In 1936 the 4╝ litre model was introduced, which offered more power while retaining the integrity of the earlier cars with their superb gear-change and servo brakes. As before, one bought a chassis and specified a body although Park Ward coachwork was the most common. Times were changing and when Bentley used the 4╝ litre engine in the post-war Mk VI, over 80% of buyers specified the standard steel body.
A rare car, being one of only sixteen, of which only six carried this attractive body, this Vanden Plas four door All Weather Tourer has driven just 18,000 miles since a complete engine rebuild and fitment of a new radiator, and just 10 000 miles since an overhaul of all running gear and fitment of overdrive. The current owner has used the vehicle in many Bentley Drivers Club and Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club rallies, but has only covered 1,000 miles with it in the last two years. A large folder accompanies the car, containing MoT's and invoices as well as detailing the history of the car. Also included in the sale are quarter and half tonneaus, made to measure picnic hamper, spare wheel cover, original prop shaft, three part worn tyres, spare inner tubes, workshop manual, original lead lamp and a selection of miscellaneous spares.A very rare and eminently practicable vintage touring Bentley.
