In 1957 the Thunderbird hit a record of 21.380 units sold, but Ford executives thought that the fact that the car only had two seats limited sales. So in 1958 it was redesigned and two more seats were added, for a total of four.
The results were surprising. In 1958 37.892 units were sold, in 1959 as many as 67.456 and in 1960 even 92.843, for a total of 198.191 units, about four times those sold in the first series.
In 1958 he received the Motor Trend Car of the Year award.
