Known History

This Renault 5 Turbo 2 has a special history, not least because it has had just three owners from new. We recall that in 1985, to meet the competition homologation requirements for the R5 Maxi Turbo, Renault produced a series of 200 " customer " examples (type 8221). In relation to the production version, the engine size was increased to 1 432cc (from 1 397cc) with a longer stroke. Certain body panels, notably the roof, were replaced with aluminium parts.

Sold new by the Renault dealer in Carcassonne, this Turbo 2 " 8221 " belonged to a member of the military for three months. The second owner had the car between 1985 and 2013 before it was acquired by the current owner. A former Renault engineer who worked in the design department and more specifically on the development of new models and prototypes, he went on to become a dealer for the marque between 1995 and 2018. He acquired this car with the idea of taking part in historic group 4 events. He was familiar with it as it had been serviced at his dealership and had just over 35 000 km on the clock when he bought it. To ensure he had a machine in perfect condition, he checked the structure and strengthened it to Cevennes spec., at the shock absorber chaps and front and rear spar gussets. At this point the wheel arches were enlarged to accommodate 15-inch wheels. Our engineer carried out this work closely following period Renault specifications.

The car was fitted with a bolt-in Renault Sport Group 4 roll-cage and Turbo 1 bucket seats. The seats, door panels, mats and roof-lining were renewed by Les Selliers de Domaine. Restoration work was carried out over an extended period of five years by which time our engineer had changed his priorities and was now wanting to devote himself to his other passion involving boats. No longer wanting to homologate the car in Group B, he made the decision to enter this superb Turbo 2 into the sale.

Today, with just under 38 000 km on the odometer, the car retains its original engine, inspected and in good condition. The clutch is new and the gearbox has been improved with R5 competition rods. The manifold, exchanger and turbo are Cévennes type parts, bought through 3S Développement like the larger alloy radiator. The original exchanger and manifold and the radiator will be delivered with the car, along with the seats, door panels and the TRX wheels.

This is a fantastic machine, meticulously and discreetly prepared and capable of being developed according to the future owner's wishes. It is ideal for entering the very best historic regularity rallies such as the Tour de Corse. A promise of unforgettable thrills.
