Known History

The Avanti II is a continuation of the model released in 1962, constantly improved and always hand built in small quantities. The production lasted until 2007, undergoing many financial ups and downs, with several buyers supported by passionate financiers. There are four generations of Avanti that have always kept Raymond Loewy's design but the one we are interested in, the second one, was produced from 1966 to 1983. The bodywork, always made of fibreglass for ease of production, is based on a Studebaker Lark cabriolet chassis. It is powered by a 6.5 litre Chevrolet engine, mated to an automatic gearbox and has a dry weight of no more than 1450 kg. The front compartment is slightly higher than on the original version to accommodate the big Corvette engine. They were all different in terms of colour, interior layout and equipment, as they were all handcrafted for a demanding clientele. The wood-rimmed 3-spoke steering wheel and the round meters in the aluminium dashboard give it a sporty style in the oversized automotive environment of the time. The owner told us that he has driven it thousands of kilometres without any problems. A car that is as endearing as it is exclusive and highly underrated.
