Model history

Henri Chapron had presented his interpretation of the CitroŽn design at the Paris motor show in 1958. The company's officials were quick to listen to the public's reaction, and he was officially commissioned to execute the model on behalf of the factory. The Dťcapotable had always carried a handsome premium over the saloon; in fact towards the end of production it had cost almost double. The end of "official" production in 1971, after ten years, did not stifle demand; it merely made the car even more exclusive.

CitroŽn would no longer offer a modified chassis upon which to work and so Chapron now had to revert to taking saloons and converting them, hence these final cars appearing in CitroŽn's official records as "run-of-the-mill" DS 23s. With costs rising accordingly, it meant that the sleek, elegant interpretation of CitroŽn's longest-running model became rarified into the domain of the few. In fact only around five or six cars were delivered.

Specific history of this car

6710 is said to be the penultimate of those cars. It was ordered by a French lady living in Hamburg, and is believed (so far as current research has shown) to be the only Dťcapotable ever to have been delivered with a fully-automatic gearbox. It remained with its first owner for around nine years (and around 85,000km) before passing directly to the current owner, an avid DS enthusiast. Apart from minor repairs to the bodywork, very little work was required, and since then the car has remained pampered within the current owner's collection, covering a mere 30,000km since its purchase.

The original spirit of the DS Dťcapotable must be that of refined elegance. It is a car that, although based upon a popular model, was at once more rarefied and refined. Of all, this car must surely be considered to be the most highly-elevated of that type, being not only among the few post-production example, but also being the sole bearer of the automatic gearbox. For lovers of the subtly unique there can be no better vehicle.
