Thanks to their pedigreed racing histories and innovative and unconventional technical features, few cars captivate the motoring world as Lancias do. Zagato coachbuilders are responsible for the dramatic and masculine styling of the Aston Martin DB4GTZ, Fiat 8V Zagato, and Maserati A6G 2000 and many other cars of the era that now command into the millions of dollars. Zagato bodies tend to be made entirely of alloy and are thus much lighter than those bodies designed by Pinnin Farina and Bertone. This, together with their `swoopy` aerodynamic traits, made Zagato bodies an obvious choice for competition use. Indeed, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Fiat, Lancia, and Maserati all commissioned Zagato to build bodies for their racecars of the era. Because of their alloy construction, Zagato bodies were expensive, and were therefore rare, even when new. Lancias also tended to be quite rare because of the high prices that their advanced technology commanded. Thus, a Lancia with a `double bubble` body by Zagato is an extremely rare find, and today, they have finally become the sought after and valuable cars they deserve to be.

At the time, the Flaminia was the flagship of the Lancia line, and incorporated numerous sophisticated features, including an aluminum V6 and transaxle with inboard brakes for excellent weight distribution and low unsprung weight. While the sedan and PF coupes were more lushly furnished, the Zagato was the most sporting version of Lancia`s top-of-the-line model. This particular Flaminia Super Sport bodied by Zagato was built in 1967, is the most advanced of the Flaminia line, and was fitted at the factory with the desirable triple carburetor set up known as`3C`, and the updated 2.8 liter engine, enlarged from the 2.5 liter cars built during the first series of production. In total, less that 600 Zagato bodied Flaminias were built during the three production series.

This example is best described as a mechanically sound, low-mile car that could be used as is, or alternatively, would make an excellent platform for a light cosmetic restoration. In short, it is a very original car. The repaint is a `driver` quality color change from ivory to red, and the chrome and aluminum trim, wheels, engine bay, trunk, and complete interior all remain cosmetically untouched, and are full of patina.

The body is straight with panel match typical of good Zagato built cars. The chrome bumpers are straight, as are the headlight bezels, and window frames. The grille has some creasing in one corner, but is complete. The majority of the Lancia badging is present, although much of the chrome has worn off. The car sits on very rare Zagato specific two piece aluminum/steel disc wheels.

The interior also shows much patina. The rubber floor mats are fairly deteriorated, as is the rear package tray. The seat leather has begun to shrink and is pulling at the seams. The dash and door leather remains quite good. The difficult to replace gauges are excellent and do not require restoration. Much of the interior chrome shows moderate weathering. As a tribute to its originality, this car retains its rare Zagato specific seats.

The engine bay and trunk also show patina appropriate for the age of the car. The underside is extremely sound and solid and does not show the significant corrosion so common to Flaminia Zagatos. Representative of an original, unrestored, low mileage example, there are no ugly stores hiding beneath this car!

Mechanically, this Flaminia Zagato has the tight feel you would expect of a low mileage example. The engine starts easily and has good power with no smoke. The transaxle is crisp and deliberate with excellent second gear syncro both warm and cold. All the gauges work. The brakes stop the car evenly and effectively, and the suspension is firm and responsive. The feel of the car on the road confirms the shown mileage.

With the car comes a near-new set of Lancia factory keys, records for the current ownership period, a reprinted shop manual, and a reprinted instruction book. Contrary to the popular misconception, it is possible to acquire parts for these cars, and if restored, this car will be a welcome attraction to any Italian car show, or a wonderful diversification to any Italian car collection. It could, however, act as a characterful driver as is, and it is a very tight, strong running example as it sits.
