In 1960, with the introduction of the all-round improved 356 B, the Speedster ĺ s successor became the Roadster. This was a change in name only, as its price point remained at the bottom of the Porsche schedule. In addition to a new name for the Convertible D (or Speedster, depending upon the observer ĺ s point of view) the 356 B brought meaningful improvements in chassis, body and engine. Alfin brake drums were standard, the bodies had raised headlights, vent windows and higher, better bumpers. Engines were both improved in reliability and standardized at 1,582 cc with the top pushrod engine, the Super 90, delivering 90 DIN horsepower (102hp).

The 1960 Porsche 356B 1600 Super 90 Roadster offered here has recently undergone a two-year total comprehensive restoration that began with the dismantling and examination of all the parts and components. The car was then stripped to bare metal, installed on a rotisserie and finished. Doors, bonnets and panels were all fit to the body, epoxy sealed, painted and color sanded and polished. All rubbers, seals, gaskets and trim were completely replaced or re-plated while new floors, battery pan and longitudinals were also installed. The engine and transmission were completely rebuilt utilizing new German hardware while the entire exhaust system was, of course, replaced with new.

The interior received the same attention to detail as well, with all electrical components either fully restored or replaced, including a new wiring loom. All instrumentation was completely rebuilt; the interior features the correct German carpeting, vinyl and leather and the seats and tops are powder coated to match the hardware throughout. The silver paintwork and red interior are both in excellent overall condition. The engine and bay are very tidy, as is the underbody and trunk. All in all, this is an exceptionally restored example that could not be duplicated at its offered price.

The roadster is by far the most rare of 356B Porsches. Out of just over 23,200 356B Porsches built. only 2,192 were roadsters. Roadster production ended in late calendar 1961 with only 563 built, the lowest production of any speedster/roadster since it was introduced in 1954. Today, this particular 1600 Super 90 serves as a perfect example of the marque and model.
