The final version of the big Healey sixes was the BJ8, introduced in 1963 and built through 1967. Fitted with twin two-inch SU HD8 carburetors, the six-cylinder engine produced 150hp (up from the 132-134hp in the prior model BJ7) and 173 foot-pounds of torque.

The Mk III also received a revised exhaust system that would actually clear a low speed bump without leaving pieces behind, finally rectifying a situation that had plagued Austin-Healeys since 1953. Passenger accommodations included the roll-up side windows introduced on the BJ7 three years earlier and a more luxuriously trimmed interior with a wood-faced dashboard and center console. Under the hood, a previously optional vacuum brake booster for the front disc and rear drum brakes was made standard.

The 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8 Mk III Sports Convertible presented here is a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust (BMIHT) certified matching numbers car, finished in its stunning original color, Colorado Red; two-stage urethane was used in two separate paint applications to give the color extreme depth and luster.

Full photo documentation of the complete and comprehensive ground-up restoration recently finished by Healey Lane of Riverside, California accompanies the sale of this car. Additionally, as a tribute to the quality and confidence of Healey Lane, the BJ8 is also being offered with a drivetrain warranty by the restorer. (For details regarding the conditions of the warranty please contact an RM Specialist prior to the auction or onsite during the sale.)

During the total restoration of the Austin-Healey, all mechanical systems, including the entire drivetrain, fuel system, electrical system, stainless steel exhaust system, suspension and brakes were rebuilt or replaced as necessary. The interior was fitted with a refinished walnut dash, rebuilt original gauges, new Ambla covered seats with chrome piping and black carpets. A new windshield was installed, as were five chrome wheels with new tires. The car comes complete with a full complement of tools including a new spare tire hammer. In addition to all these desirable features, the BJ8 comes with original dealer service documents and the original driver ĺ s handbook.

This MKIII is certainly worth a very close inspection as it would be hard to find a better Austin-Healey BJ8 anywhere in the world.
