Jaguar Cars Ltd. was not a stranger to success, although recovering from the war was difficult for any manufacturing company. At the London Motor Show in 1948, Jaguar unveiled the XK 120 with greater success than William Lyons had anticipated. As demand for the XK 120 mounted, Lyons rethought his original plan of only building a few hundred examples in aluminum and instead ordered tooling to produce larger quantities clothed in steel. Before the steel tooling arrived, Jaguar was able to produce 240 “ alloy ” bodied examples. Most of the “ alloy ” cars made it to the track in one fashion or another and were so accomplished that Jaguar built an outright race version – the C-Type.

A C-Type won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1951 and 1953. These wins were the first of an amazing seven overall victories for Jaguar. The example presented here is a very thoughtful and exacting replica of a 1952 Jaguar C- Type. This replica does not just look the part, as every effort was made to make the car sound and perform just like the million dollar originals.

David Brown of Invercargill, N.Z., built the aluminum body and tubular chassis from factory drawings provided by noted classic car dealer Ian Cummins of Sydney, Australia. Under the bonnet is a tuned 1952 Jaguar XK120 engine just as would have appeared in the road going C-Type with a two-piece alloy C-Type finned sump, C-Type style dual sand-cast SU carburetors, a C-Type intake manifold including an aluminum cold air box, and a C-Type baked enamel exhaust manifold. The engine had a great deal of money spent on it and features Powermax Hepalite pistons, larger than stock valves, D-Type Wade 140 cams and a lightweight flywheel. In addition to these modifications, the engine was professionally ported, polished and balanced.

The four-speed manual gearbox is a Moss unit with a genuine C-Type top casing; it has a heavy-duty clutch and is mated to a genuine C-Type rear end. The entire suspension system from the trailing arms, control arms and torsion bars is correct to a C-Type. Accordingly, the brake system features proper C-Type drums at all four corners.

Appropriate to the level of authenticity achieved throughout the rest of the car, the electrical system is entirely by Lucas and features such period touches as braided looms.

The interior features a host of genuine C-Type equipment, which includes all the instruments, switches, and the steering wheel. The aluminum seats and green leather upholstery were made using original patterns. The dipswitch, handbrake, brass fire extinguisher, spare spark plug panel, panic handle, Brooklands type screens and the toolbox under the passenger seat are all exactly as they would be on an original example. The fit and finish on this replica is outstanding in every respect. The panel fit is near flawless and the classic British Racing Green paint makes it all the more impressive to behold.

Having completed several 1,000km events in Australia and America, the vendor reports that this C-Type replica is a joy to drive, “ It is extremely fast yet, pleasantly, is docile enough to be driven leisurely. ” Because the C-Type was built with strict adherence to original specifications, thanks to recent regulation changes, it is eligible to race in the FIA vintage series.

While C-Type replicas are becoming more common, few stand up to the one presented here – virtually indistinguishable from an original C-Type in every single way, except for the seven digit price tag.
