Built in 1956, the Mercedes-Benz 220S Sedan debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show. As quality and craftsmanship were synonymous with the Mercedes-Benz name, the 220S – or Super – attracted an enthusiastic audience. Although it was the four door sedan that was introduced first, a convertible appeared shortly thereafter, and a hard top by 1957. The latter two models became the most sought after and, accordingly, held higher price tags.

Powering each car was the much-acclaimed inline six-cylinder engine that in essence was the same size as the 219, but with added horsepower. Progressing in typical Mercedes-Benz fashion, the 2,195 cc engine would undergo continuous refinement, increasing compression by 1957 to an 8.7:1 ratio, thus making these cars slightly more enviable. At about the same time, the automatic transmission also became available as an option to buyers who wanted less to do with manually shifting gears.

In its best form, the 220S cabriolet represents what automobile enthusiasts found then, and today, as most appealing – the irresistible sporting lines and the openness only a convertible can offer. As a result, limited production numbers and a short-lived manufacturing run made the 220S cabriolet a smart choice – as it does today from a car collecting standpoint.

The beautiful 1957 Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet pictured here in black with a red leather interior is an excellent overall example. Having resided in the collection of a prominent doctor in Northern California for many years, it has been treated to first class ownership and care, which is reflected accordingly in the cabriolet ’ s remarkable overall condition. The 220S was repainted and fitted with a new leather interior in its original colors a few years ago, and has been driven sparingly since. The top is proper and fits the Mercedes-Benz well and the new top boot was recently fit by marque specialists. While in the hands of the restoration firm the 220S was also treated to an extensive mechanical inspection and service, as well as a total vehicle detail.

As a very fit running and driving example with a straight body, excellent paint, very good chrome and a high quality interior, this 220S cabriolet is remarkably versatile – perfect for the novice and seasoned collector alike.
