Along the way, Ferrari abandoned sports car racing, not only production-based cars but also the low production, high performance sports-racers upon which so much of its reputation was based. No longer did Ferrari owners take short wheelbase 250 GTs to the track or on legendary events like the Tour de France. Ferrari was in two very separate – and arguably not even parallel – businesses, building a few dazzlingly high tech Formula One cars on one hand and series-produced gran turismos on the other.

Ferrari’s clienti, however, kept pressing Ferrari for the return of the dual-purpose sports car. And Ferrari listened, considered and responded.

It marked a turning point for Ferrari, which had consistently turned a blind eye toward the efforts of loyal clients to turn the F40 into a competitive sports car. Their success, even without the factory’s support, showed the potential not only for Ferrari’s reputation but also for developing a viable business.

Gianpiero Moretti championed development of the Ferrari 333SP for IMSA competition in the U.S. Gian Luigi Buitoni, Ferrari North America’s new President, seized upon the success of the Italian Ferrari Club’s 1993 Ferrari 348 TB-TS Challenge to support creation of a formal Ferrari Challenge series for the 348. Established in 1994 with races in North America, Europe and Japan and an overall champion decided at runoffs at Mugello in Italy, the Ferrari Challenge expanded again in 1995. Hundreds of competitors joined the series, demonstrating the passion and excitement as only Ferrari could express it.

In addition to appropriate safety measures, the 348 Challenge cars have upgraded suspensions and run factory-sealed engines to prevent unauthorized modifications. Built in very limited numbers under the Ferrari factory’s supervision, they are the optimum combination of performance, handling and style within the Ferrari 348 model range.

The Ferrari 348 GTS offered here is one of 32 factory-prepared Challenge cars for the North American series. It has been race prepared by the factory and subsequently by a Ferrari dealer. At the time of cataloging, its participation, if any, in the Ferrari Challenge series has not been established but it has recently been fully serviced with new tires and has only nine subsequent track hours. It was featured on the cover of the DuPont Registry as the Editors’ Choice and is in sharp, track ready condition.

The Ferrari Challenge continues today, fourteen years after it was first established, as one of the most exciting, enjoyable and competitive racing series in the world. This Ferrari 348 GTS Challenge is no longer eligible for the current series, which has classes for 430 and 360 Modenas, but the popularity of track driving these exciting Ferraris will almost certainly generate the opportunity soon for some measure of participation in the Ferrari Shell Historic Challenge. In the meantime, this is an opportunity to acquire one of the most invigorating, enjoyable, Ferrari road cars ever built.
