V8 front-engine and foldable roof in metal; two premières for Ferrari when the California came
Made out of aluminium
The Ferrari California was unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. As has become true to Ferrari, the California is a sportscar that can only be described using superlatives. Ferrari is the embodiment of rebellion, luxury, and sportiness. Many people get dreaming of better places at the mere mention of its name, and the California is no less exotic than its name suggests, in fact it is just the opposite. However, this supercar did surprise because of one decision.
In 2008, Ferrari decided to design a completely new range of sportscars. Therefore, they enlisted the help of Pininfarina, the world-famous Italian design house, to create the California. Pininfarina decided to push the boundaries and incorporate many new specifications and features into the design. Thus, the California became the first Ferrari with a front-mounted V8 engine and the first with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Also, Ferrari had never sold cars with a convertible roof that was made of metal. The front-mounted V8 contradicted the traditional Ferrari concept, according to some enthusiasts. Nevertheless, the California sold excellently. After having done some adjustments and modernizations, it was succeeded by the exotic Portofino.
The powerful V8 engine in the front is as powerful as one would expect a Ferrari V8 to be. Completely built of aluminum and with a 90° V-angle, it is unmistakably Ferrari, which means it cannot ever get boring. It produces an impressive 460 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in only four seconds. The occupants can enjoy the luxury that has been incorporated into this sports car, sometimes defying all expectations. The leather seats are designed to be ergonomic and are adjustable in all directions, the trunk space is large for Ferrari standards, and the transition from convertible to closed coupe provides an uncommon versatility to this sports car.
Despite being a true sports car, the California is equipped with enjoyable features that are not typically associated with Ferrari but significantly enhance comfort.
