The E-Type design owed much to that of the racing D-Type, a monocoque tub forming the main structure while a tubular spaceframe extended forwards to support the engine. Conceived and developed as an open sportscar, the Jaguar E-Type debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961 in coupé form. The car caused a sensation, spontaneous applause breaking out at the unveiling, with its instantly classic lines and a 140mph plus top speed. In October 1964 the 4.2 litre model was released. The more powerful engine, all-synchromesh gearbox and Lockheed brake servo formed part of the new specification and made for a much more user-friendly car. Apart from '4.2' badging, the car's external appearance was unchanged, but under the skin there were numerous detailed improvements, mainly to the electrical and cooling systems, and to the seating which was upgraded to a more comfortable touring style.
This lovely, right hand drive 1968 Jaguar E-Type Series I 2 2 Coupé was supplied new in the UK by Henlys, Bournemouth. This E-Type comes with a full ownership history from new with many invoices dating back to 1982. Treated to a comprehensive restoration between 1995 and 1999, this E-Type was dry stored in 2002 and used sparingly until 2020 where the current vendor commissioned a comprehensive recommissioning costing over £10,000, the work of which was completed by specialists Nick Kerner 4 Wheel Drive.
Offered with a sizeable history file which includes many old MoT test certificates dating from 1975, various sundry invoices, many restoration invoices, and the most recent £10,000 recommissioning invoice, its current V5C registration document and an MoT test certificate valid until March 2024. Beautifully finished and highly usable, this Series I E-Type is showing circa 66,000 miles on the odometer, which when looking at the relevant history appears to be genuine. The Series 1 2 2 is one of the most desirable models owing to its practicality and desirability all in one complete package.
