In 1991, Bentley introduced the Continental R, a beautiful coupé and the first model not based on a Rolls-Royce. The Continental R is the fastest production car the brand has built up to that point and it is also the most expensive series car for sale at that time. Four years later, Bentley presents the open variant, the Azure.
Pininfarina will be given the honour of developing the open version and the Italian design house will also be tasked with assembling the cars before they are shipped to Crewe for finishing. The 6.75-litre V8 is the same as in the coupé, but now with even more power.
This second generation of the Bentley Azure was developed during the twilight period when the VAG group and BMW were fighting over who would own Bentley and Rolls-Royce. Eventually, the VAG group added Bentley to its portfolio and BMW took off with Rolls-Royce. During the negotiations, it quickly became clear to Volkswagen that if Bentley did not invest in the development of a power unit itself, there would be a good chance that it would have to turn to BMW for its 4.4 V8 engine. Bentley, therefore, started with a very thorough development of the 6.75 tappet V8, which is also the engine in this Azure. The foresight of then VAG boss Piëch was a hit and the 6.75 V8 engine in this Bentley is still one of the main reasons for people to buy the car.
This Azure was 'born' in 2009. Since then, the car has been enjoyed only marginally because the odometer of this four-seater convertible is only 24,818 kilometres. It will therefore not surprise you that the condition of this huge, 5.42 meter long Azure is simply stunning.
The burgundy, almost black paint has a beautiful shine and the body is free of damage. Simply put, this English-style icon is in as good as new condition. The body seams and closures are exactly as they should be. The large 20” wheels, chrome and lighting parts are all very fresh and give the car the sparkling look it should have.
The dark brown convertible top, which has not been used much due to the limited experience of the car, is also exceptionally beautiful. Both the dark exterior and the very luxurious interior lining are beautiful.
Now that we look inside: this Azure is equipped with a particularly stylish and luxurious interior: dark brown with beige accents, with the wooden inlays of the dashboard and doors combining better with this dark exterior colour than we have ever seen before. Look around you and you will fully understand why the model was and perhaps still is the world's best convertible. The interior looks exceptionally fresh, even if we take the mileage into consideration. What a place to be!
Technically the car is completely in order. A look under the bonnet shows that the gigantic twin-turbocharged V8 not only runs beautifully smoothly but is also in excellent optical condition. With over 450 hp of power and an impressive torque of 875 Nm, driving the Bentley is an absurdly pleasant experience. Comfort like no other convertible, combined with an extremely smooth and very fast eight-cylinder: it simply doesn't get much better than this Azure.
In terms of maintenance, the Bentley is fully up to date, according to the original maintenance book, which includes the leather case with all other documents. The bottom is undamaged and shows that the car has had no damage.
It is probably difficult to find an Azure with such mileage and in a condition like this.

In 1991 introduceert Bentley de Continental R, een prachtige coupé en het eerste model dat niet gebaseerd is op een Rolls-Royce. De Continental R is de snelste productieauto die het merk tot op dat moment gebouwd heeft en het is tevens de duurste serieauto die op dat moment te koop is. Vier jaar later presenteert Bentley de open variant, de Azure.
Pininfarina krijgt de eer de open versie te ontwikkelen en het Italiaanse designhuis krijgt ook de taak de auto's de assembleren, alvorens ze naar Crewe worden verscheept voor de afbouw. De 6,75 liter grote V8 is dezelfde als in de coupé maar nu met nog wat meer vermogen.
Deze tweede generatie van de Bentley Azure werd ontwikkeld in de twilight-periode waarin het VAG-concern en BMW aan het vechten waren over wie eigenaar zou worden van Bentley en Rolls-Royce. Uiteindelijk voegde het VAG-concern Bentley aan haar portefeuille toe en ging BMW er met Rolls-Royce vandoor. Gedurende de onderhandelingen werd voor Volkswagen al snel duidelijk dat als Bentley niet zelf zou investeren in de ontwikkeling van een krachtbron de kans groot zou zijn dat ze bij BMW moest aankloppen voor diens 4.4 V8-motor. Bentley begon daarom met een zeer grondige doorontwikkeling van de 6,75 klepstoter V8, tevens de motor die in deze Azure ligt. De vooruitziende blik van toenmalig VAG-baas Piëch was een schot in de roos en de 6,75 V8-motor in deze Bentley is nog steeds één van de hoofdredenen voor mensen om de auto te kopen.
Deze Azure werd 'geboren' in 2009. Sindsdien is er slechts marginaal van de auto genoten want de kilometerteller van deze vierzits cabriolet staat op slechts 24.818 kilometer. Het zal u dan ook niet verbazen dat de staat van deze reusachtige, 5,42 meter lange Azure simpelweg schitterend is.
De burgundy, bijna zwarte lak is prachtig van glans en de carrosserie is vrij van beschadigingen. Simpel gezegd is dit Engelse stijlicoon in een zo goed als nieuwe conditie. De carrosserienaden, sluitingen zijn exact zoals ze horen te zijn. De grote 20” wielen, het chroomwerk en de verlichtingsdelen zijn allemaal zeer fris en geven de auto de sprankelende uitstraling die hij behoort te hebben.
Ook de donkerbruine cabrioletkap, die vanwege de geringe ervaring van de auto niet veel gebruikt is, is uitzonderlijk mooi. Zowel de donkere buitenzijde als de zeer luxe binnenbekleding ervan zijn prachtig.
Nu we toch binnenkijken: deze Azure is uitgerust met een bijzonder stijlvol en luxe interieur: donkerbruin met beige accenten, waarbij de houten inlegdelen van het dashboard en de portieren bij deze donkere exterieurkleur mooier combineren dan we ooit eerder zagen. Kijk om u heen en u zult volledig begrijpen waarom het model als 's werelds beste cabriolet door het leven ging en misschien zelfs nog wel gaat. Het interieur oogt uitzonderlijke fris, zélfs als we de kilometerstand daarbij in overweging nemen. Wat een plek om te verkeren!
Technisch is de auto volledig in orde. Een blik onder de motorkap laat zien dat de gigantische V8 met dubbele turbo niet alleen prachtig soepel loopt maar ook optisch in een schitterende staat verkeert. Met ruim 450 pk aan vermogen en een indrukwekkend koppel van 875 Nm is het rijden met de Bentley een absurd prettige ervaring. Comfort zoals geen andere cabriolet dat biedt, in combinatie met een extreem soepele en zeer snelle achtcilinder: het wordt simpelweg niet veel beter dan deze Azure.
Qua onderhoud is de Bentley helemaal bij, aldus het originele onderhoudsboek dat inclusief het lederen etui met alle overige documenten aanwezig is. De bodem is ongehavend en laat zien dat de auto geen schades heeft gehad.
Het is vermoedelijk lastig een Azure te vinden met een dergelijke kilometerstand en in een conditie als deze.
