290bhp, 302 cu. in. V8 engine, Muncie four-speed manual transmission, independent coil spring front and rear leaf spring with traction bars suspension, front disc and rear drum brakes. Wheelbase: 108.1"

By 1969, the Chevrolet Camaro was no longer playing catch-up to Ford’s Mustang. The Z/28 name in particular was becoming synonymous with performance thanks to its high-output 302 V8 engine. In 1968 and 1969 the Camaro Z/28s campaigned by Penske Racing and piloted by Mark Donohue won the Trans-Am Championship against ferocious competition from Boss 302 Mustangs, Dodge Challengers and the like. In 1969, the Camaro was selected as the Indy 500 pace car, already now for the second time.

1969 was also the concluding year for the classic Z-F Camaro body and these models feature the longer, lower look most favored by enthusiasts. The smooth sides were enhanced with sculptured speed lines stretching from the front edge of the wheel arches and straight back from the top. Simulated slotted vertical vents were positioned slightly ahead of the rear wheels, enhancing the aggressive posture. This famous design is the inspiration for the new model Camaro recently announced.

The striking Z/28 shown here is presented in its original and highly desirable colors of LeMans blue with contrasting ivory bucket seats and black carpets in its consoled interior. It has been restored from a rust-free original to current show standards and features a correct, matching numbers and date-coded 302 cubic inch DZ engine and Muncie four-speed transmission.

The subject of an extensive restoration to factory stock specification, the Z/28 has very few show miles and has just been comprehensively freshened for spring 2007, including an impressively detailed engine bay and undercarriage.

And it drives as good as it looks, with professional attention confirming the high state of tune, all suspension and braking components tweaked, and a full wheel alignment performed. Compression is strong with all cylinders charting 175-185 lbs. (the inspection report is available with the car). The vendor believes the actual power output exceeds the factory stated number of 290hp. All systems perform robustly and all gauges work. The Z/28 has three of its four original ‘YH’-stamped wheels, with the fourth a period factory replacement ‘RW’ wheel. Shod with original-type Goodyear Speedway E70x15 tires, the car has its correct spare and jack as well as a full set of Delco shocks for show.

Best of all is the satisfying rumble of a finely tuned, high output, small block V8 in a timewarp example representing the pinnacle of the muscle/pony car movement.
