The 348 was, in fact, a watershed design, incorporating for the first time the principles Ferrari learned in its Formula One Grand Prix development programs into the basic attributes and configuration of high speed production road cars.

To answer the call from Ferrari’s privateer racers, in 1993-1994 through an association with Michlotto (Ferrari’s favorite tuner), it was possible to buy an off the shelf 348 in full race guise. This was no dealer-installed option; the Michelotto Competiziones were each fitted with a tuned version of the stock V8 that produced an astounding 360 horsepower, which required half shafts, borrowed from the F40.

Modifications to the body included a Lexan rear window and lightweight alloy panels for the engine cover and deck lid. Carbon fiber was used extensively on the car with the doors, bumpers, and undertray all being made of the still-new ultra light, super strong composite material. Extensive ducting was needed to cool the upgraded 15-inch ventilated Brembo disc brakes nesting within the massive 18-inch Speedline center-locking five-spoke magnesium wheels.

The suspension system was specially designed by Michelotto with fully adjustable Koni dampers and revised geometry to reduce dive. To increase rigidity, gussets were installed around the engine bay and chassis. The interior of the Michelotto Competizione was stripped bare, fitted with a FIA roll cage, drilled aluminum pedals, a racing steering wheel and approved race seats.

In total, only 11 Michelotto Competizione variants of the 348 were produced. Nine of these were put directly into collections and were never raced. The two that were raced proved to be very successful: one finished 8th in the GTU class at the 1994 Daytona 24 hours and the other clinched the Group 2 title in the 1993 Italian Supercar GT series.

Of the 11 built, only four made it to American shores, including the 1994 Ferrari 348 GT Michelotto Competizione S/N 99107 presented here. It was shipped new to Florida's largest factory-authorized Ferrari Dealer, Shelton Sports Cars, December 16, 1994. To accommodate American FIA regulations, it had been special ordered with a full fire-extinguisher system and Momo race seats in addition to all the other Mechelotto modifications.

The Ferrari has belonged to only two Ferrari enthusiast owners since new, and has seen limited track use. In 1997, it was present at the Concours Italiano, Carmel Valley, CA and according to its vendor, remains today in complete original condition, having never been raced competitively. As a fully modified race car, the Ferrari is not street legal, and like any race car, RM Auctions highly advises a thorough inspection before bringing it to the race track.
