The first question is which one? An Italian sports car is not for you, no room for the rest of the family and the dog. A German car is also not what you desire, ok for everyday use, but you are looking for something to make you feel special in the weekend. You Sir/Madam are searching for an aristocratic British limousine. Oh but wait! No we have not forgotten the dog! You wish can be fulfilled probably thanks to the late Clyde Cassidy’s thoughts. Cassidy was an American Rolls-Royce enthusiast. Cassidy was not interested in 100% original cars, he preferred something different. If that different did not exist, he would simply create it himself. Cassidy saw British limousine’s more as a blanc canvas, something to create something beautiful from. This Rolls-Royce is certainly special. Cassidy not only loved extraordinary body shapes, he was also a perfectionist. The transformation of this Silver Shadow has been executed to an exacting standard. The quality was so good that Cassidy even received a letter from a Mr. Reynolds on behalf of Rolls-Royce Motorcars in the UK complimenting him with the transformation. This transformation from saloon to station-wagon is beyond compare. Most people believe that this Rolls-Royce left the factory as a station-wagon. Every detail is correct. The carpets have been manufactured correctly, the interior ornamental strips have been made to fit perfectly. A YouTube film at the time revealed that those ornamental strips cost a fortune. The fact that the total transformation cost over 100,000 US dollars is not lost when viewing the car. Even though just carried out by just one man instead of one the big design houses, this is coach-building of the upmost quality. The Silver Shadow was a modern car for its time. It was the first Roller with a monocoque as opposed to a body-on-frame construction as well as being the first with disc brakes and independent rear suspension. Mechanical aspects were happily also not overlooked. The car wallet contains a recent invoice for over 10,000 US dollars and shows us that all matter of mechanical issues were attended to. The bodywork and chassis condition are particularly good. The car has fine panels with correct alignment, the lacquer too has been nicely cherished. The interior is quite stunning and has built up a fine patina. Transformation from limousine to station-wagon has naturally added some extra weight, although nothing to embarrass the 6.2 Litre V8. As Rolls-Royce used to say when someone informed after the car’s power: Ample! The same goes for this Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow station-wagon. U bent een dame of heer met een gedistingeerde eigen stijl. U hebt altijd hard gewerkt en nu is het tijd om uzelf te belonen met een klassieke auto. Maar wat te kopen? Zo'n "Italiaans sportautootje" is niets voor u. Geen ruimte voor de hond of het gezin. Een Duitse auto is al helemaal niet wat u zoekt, prima voor elke dag niet iets om u speciaal te laten voelen in het weekend. U bent op zoek naar een aristocratische Britse limousine. Dan zal nooit één van uw passagiers klagen over een gebrek aan ruimte. Oh wacht! de hond! Het vorenstaande is mogelijk een stukje van de denkwijze van wijlen Clyde Cassidy geweest. Cassidy was een liefhebber van Rolls-Royce uit de Verenigde Staten. Cassidy gaf niet zoveel om auto's die honderd procent origineel waren, hij had liever iets bijzonders. Als het bijzondere niet bestond dan creëerde hij het gewoon zelf. Cassidy zag de Britse limousines meer als een blank canvas, een mooie basis om iets bijzonders van te maken. Bijzonder is deze Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow zeker. Cassidy hield niet alleen van bijzondere Rolls-Royces met bijzondere carrosserie-vormen maar was ook een perfectionist. De ombouw van deze Silver Shadow is dan ook naar een extreem hoge maatstaf uitgevoerd. Zo hoog zelfs dat Cassidy een brief heeft ontvangen van meneer Reynolds die destijds was verbonden aan Rolls-Royce Motorcars in het Verenigd Koninkrijk om hem te complimenteren met de ombouw. De ombouw van limousine naar stationwagon is dan ook exceptioneel goed gelukt. De meeste mensen denken dat deze Rolls-Royce als stationwagon de fabriek heeft verlaten. Alle details van de ombouw kloppen. De tapijten zijn op de juiste manier vervaardigd, de sierlijsten in het interieur zijn perfect aangepast. Zoals op een film van deze auto op YouTube valt te zien hebben de sierlijsten een kapitaal gekost. De gehele ombouw heeft destijds meer dan $ 100.000,- gekost en het is aan de Rolls-Royce te zien. Hoewel uitgevoerd door één man, in plaats van één van de grote designhuizen, is dit een coachbuilt in optima forma. De Silver Shadow was voor zijn tijd een hele moderne auto. Zo was het de eerste Rolls-Royce met een monocoque in plaats van een body-on-frame constructie en was het tevens de eerste Rolls-Royce met zaken zoals schijfremmen en onafhankelijke wielophanging achter. De techniek is de laatste jaren gelukkig ook niet uit het oog verloren. In de map met documentatie is een recente factuur van meer dan $ 10.000,- aanwezig. Zoals valt te lezen zijn er allerhande technische zaken hersteld of gerepareerd. De staat van de carrosserie en het chassis zijn bijzonder goed te noemen. De auto heeft fraai plaatwerk en correcte passingen en ook de lak is in mooie verzorgde staat. Het interieur is bijzonder fraai en heeft inmiddels een mooi patina. De ombouw van limousine naar stationwagon heeft natuurlijk voor wat extra kilo's gezorgd, maar niets dat de 6.2 liter V8-motor in het nauw drijft. Vroeger gaf Rolls-Royce steevast hetzelfde antwoord als iemand vroeg hoeveel vermogen de motor leverde: voldoende. Dat is bij deze Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Stationwagon niet anders. Bent u dus op zoek naar een unieke Rolls-Royce die ook nog eens ongelooflijk praktisch is, dan is dit de auto voor u.
