245bhp, 312 cu. in. overhead valve Thunderbird Special V8 engine, four-barrel Holley carburetor, two-speed automatic transmission, independent front suspension, live rear axle and four-wheel hydraulic brakes. Wheelbase: 102"

When Ford first saw the new Corvette at the January 1953 Motorama, Ford’s own sports car project was quickly moved to the front burner. Now considered a ‘crash program,’ Ford’s sports car took shape between February and May of 1953. A look at the design brief is interesting – it had to look like a Ford, be an open two-seater with a canvas top, maximize the use of production parts including the Interceptor V8, and have a top speed of over 100 mph.

Thunderbird outsold Corvette more than three to one, due in large part to its excellent power, creature comforts and its air of sophistication. In 1957, the third and last year of production for the classic two-seater styling, Ford introduced what was thought to be the best Thunderbird. It had a more powerful engine with more horsepower, making it the fastest Thunderbird as well

Ford gave the Thunderbird a complete makeover for 1957, with a clean and open grille, while the rear fenders and trunk were extended to accommodate the spare tire. The “high-canted fenders”, Ford’s term for the 1957’s angled tailfins of full size Fords, also appeared on the Thunderbird, nicely accenting the longer trunk and fenders. Overall, the 1957 Thunderbird’s design was very well received and sales increased a third from 1956.

The 1957 Thunderbird offered here from the Ponder Collection is finished in a lustrous red with a matching leather interior, has a white soft top and comes with a red removable hard top with the Thunderbird’s trademark portholes. It has only traveled 264 miles since completing its restoration and subsequently is very impressive to behold. Particular attention was made to ensure that the Thunderbird was not only well restored but done so to correct period specifications. A well-optioned example, the car comes with a Town & Country radio, Master Guide power steering, heater and defroster and a beautiful set of Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels wrapped in wide whitewall tires.

Formerly the property of the MBNA Collection, this T-Bird is in exceptional overall condition and the quality of the restoration is truly outstanding. It will undoubtedly be an excellent weekend driver or potential concours competitor. The Ford Thunderbird is a true American icon from the fifties and the example offered here is the ideal car for someone who wants to relive those glorious days.
