In 1955, when the Mercedes-Benz 300SL had already been on the market as a closed coupe for a few years, the German company decided to come up with an affordable two-seater whose design was strongly inspired by its pricey and advanced big brother. The 190SL, which is only available as a convertible, is equipped with a 1,897 cc four-cylinder engine that is linked to a four-speed manual gearbox. Unlike the 300SL, the 190SL is not equipped with a tubular chassis but uses a shortened chassis from the W121 sedan.
This anthracite grey 190SL, from 1963, is in phenomenal condition, something that is not surprising after a complete 'nut and bolt' restoration. The bodywork is simply beautiful and can be viewed in detail in a beautiful accompanying book. Sleek, clean and with excellent fits of the hinged parts. Other seams between the various sheet metal parts are also beautiful. There are many photos of the restoration, which also show that not only has the body been expertly restored by a specialist, many chrome parts have also been re-chromed. As a result, all the chrome work is in new condition and stands out in a very chic way due to the dark grey paint.
Mercedes-Benz has designed a fantastic interior for the 190SL, with a dashboard largely in paint colour that houses beautiful meters. Furthermore, the extensive use of leather in the interior dominates. The top and bottom of the stylish dashboard, door panels and of course the seats: beautiful red leather decorates the interior and carpet in the same color completes it. New seems to be the magic word in the interior because everything you see has been addressed. New upholstery, new carpets, new paintwork: everything is perfect about this SL. The ivory-coloured steering wheel and the gear knob in the same colour contrast fantastically with the otherwise colourful and dark grey interior. The VDO meters are clearly visible and in top condition, both optically and functionally. What an ambience, what class. It is clear that the interior was completely taken into account during the restoration because there is really not a square millimetre wrong, everything has been perfected down to the finest detail, as befits a Mercedes-Benz.
Perfection is also the magic word under the hood. The room looks very fresh and the engine is free of any form of leakage or remnants of previous leaks. A beautiful power source to look at, this four-cylinder with its double carburettors. The engine, like the gearbox and drivetrain, has been completely overhauled and produces approximately 105 hp. This makes it possible to reach a top speed of just over 170 km/h. But honestly: those are not the speeds at which this SL brings out the best in itself. Sporty touring on beautiful rolling roads, crossing beautiful villages, sometimes stretching your legs and especially looking back when you walk away from the car: what a stunning and stylish appearance.
The car comes with a beautiful restoration book. An SL the likes of which they rarely come across!

Als in 1955 de Mercedes-Benz 300SL al een paar jaar op de markt is als gesloten coupé besluit het Duitse concern met een betaalbare tweezitter te komen die qua vormgeving sterk geïnspireerd is op de prijzige en geavanceerde grote broer. In de 190SL, die alleen beschikbaar is als cabriolet, is uitgerust met een 1.897 cc metende viercilinder die gekoppeld is aan een handgeschakelde vierbak. In tegenstelling tot de 300SL is de 190SL niet voorzien van een buizenchassis maar is er een ingekort chassis van de W121 sedan als basis gebruikt.
Deze antracietgrijze 190SL, afkomstig uit 1963, verkeert in een fenomenale staat, iets dat niet vreemd is na een complete 'nut and bolt' restauratie. De carrosserie is simpelweg schitterend en uitgebreid te bekijken in een schitterend bijgevoegd boek. Strak, zuiver en met uitstekende passingen van de scharnierende delen. Ook overige naden tussen de verschillende plaatwerkdelen zijn prachtig. Van de restauratie zijn veel foto's aanwezig, waaruit tevens blijkt dat niet alleen de carrosserie vakkundig is gerestaureerd door een specialist, ook veel chroomdelen zijn opnieuw verchroomd. Daardoor is al het chroomwerk feitelijk in nieuwstaat en het valt door de donkergrijze lak op een zeer chique wijze goed op.
Mercedes-Benz heeft een fantastisch interieur ontworpen voor de 190SL, met een grotendeels in lakkleur uitgevoerd dashboard waarin prachtige meters zijn ondergebracht. Verder overheerst voor het vele gebruik van leder in het interieur. De boven- en onderzijde van het stijlvolle dashboard, deurpanelen en natuurlijk de stoelen: prachtig rood leder siert het interieur en tapijt in dezelfde kleur maakt het helemaal af. Nieuw lijkt het toverwoord in het interieur want werkelijk alles dat u ziet is aangepakt. Nieuwe bekleding, nieuwe tapijten, nieuw lakwerk: alles is perfect aan deze SL. Het ivoorkleurige stuur en de pookknop in dezelfde kleur contrasteren fantastisch met het verder kleurrijke met donkergrijze interieur. De meters van VDO zijn duidelijk zichtbaar en in een topstaat verkerend, zowel optisch als functioneel. Wat een ambiance, wat een klasse. Overduidelijk is het interieur volledig meegenomen tijdens de restauratie want er mankeert werkelijk geen vierkante millimeter, alles is tot in de finesse geperfectioneerd, zoals dat bij een Mercedes-Benz past.
Ook onder de motorkap is perfectie het toverwoord. De ruimte oogt zeer fris en de motor is vrij van iedere vorm van lekkage of overblijfselen van eerdere lekkages. Een fraaie krachtbron om te zien ook, deze viercilinder met zijn dubbele carburateurs. De motor is, net als de versnellingsbak en aandrijflijn, compleet gereviseerd en levert zo'n 105 pk. Daarmee is het mogelijk een topsnelheid van iets meer dan 170 km/u te bereiken. Maar eerlijk: dat zijn niet de snelheden waarop deze SL het beste in zichzelf naar bovenhaalt. Sportief toeren op mooie glooiende wegen, fraaie dorpjes doorkruisen, soms even de benen strekken en vooral omkijken als u wegloopt bij de auto: wat een bloedmooie en stijlvolle verschijning.
Bij de auto komt een prachtig restauratieboek. Een SL zoals ze maar weinig voorbij komen!
