In 1901, Henry Martyn Leland and partner Robert C. Faulconer designed an improved engine for the Oldsmobile Curved Dash Runabout, which was rejected because of the tooling costs it presented. The next year, Henry Ford's former backers welcomed the pair, and by 1902, the first Cadillacs were on the road. .
