Remarkably Original Late Build Car

The 330 GTC was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966. It used a Tipo 209/66 engine. This was a new unit with a revised cylinder block that was used exclusively for this model. It was quite compact considering its displacement, and produced an honest 300bhp out of its four liters.

The body, designed and built by Pininfarina, combined a 400 Superamerica-500 Superfast-like front with a 275 GTS-style rear end. It is a particularly elegant Ferrari and is by no means out of place even today. The 330 GTCs have been and continue to be described as one of the finest road-going Ferraris ever produced. In total, just 600 330 GTCs were produced between 1966 and 1968.

This particular car, s/n 10825, is a fantastically well preserved, matching numbers, unrestored example with original paint and interior. It was an extremely late build car- among the very last 330 GTCs constructed, was equipped for the US market, and fitted with power windows and air conditioning. It was sold new through Mesa Imports to Charles C. Sides of Casa Grande, Arizona, and remained with him until late 2002. The car passed through dealers in California and Europe before being sold to the current owner by Fantasy Junction and Ferraris-Online in August of 2005. It is effectively a two-owner car with records that appear to support the 23,900 miles.

During the current ownership period much mechanical work has been carried out. The brake and clutch hydraulic systems were completely serviced, and a new exhaust system was fitted. The half shafts were disassembled and serviced, and a new set of Michelin XWX tires were installed. As part of the service work, all of the fluids were changed and minor adjustment made.

Having never been restored, this example is a rare `survivor` in a sea of restored cars. Having spent nearly all its life in Arizona and California, the body and underside are completely free of rust or rust repair. The body has never suffered any accident repair, and all the gaps are satisfactory per the Ferrari factory. The original paint was sealed in clear coat as the initial fading process started. The paint shows patina appropriate for forty years of careful ownership, and has just a handful of minor imperfections about the car. There is one 3 inch scratch on the left rear fender, and one dent in the right side rocker panel slightly larger than the size of a quarter. The exterior chrome is all straight, and generally very good, although the right rear bumper shows moderate pitting. The car sits on nice Borrani wire wheels with new Michelin XWX tires.

The interior is representative of a totally unrestored car. The dash upholstery, wood, and gauge faces are all excellent. The console, door panel, and headliner material are also excellent. The carpets may have been replaced at some point, and are in good condition with minimal discoloration. The seat leather is somewhat hard, and has cracked in some places, but speaks for the originality of the car in its entirety. This car still retains its original Blaupunkt radio, factory wood wheel, and original seat belts.

The engine compartment is also unrestored. It has remained completely stock with correct yellow fuel lines, washer bag, and battery hold down, but is not overly detailed. The underside is completely rust free and shows evidence of much recent mechanical work. The trunk has been nicely preserved, like the interior.

Mechanically, the car is good. The compression was recently tested and showed between 125 and 140 lbs on all twelve cylinders. The car smokes moderately, as many 330 GTCs do. The transaxle is excellent with very good second gear syncro both when warm and cold. All the gauges work. The A/C system blows, but not very cold. The hi-low beam stock has been broken, but comes with the car. The brakes are excellent, but the shocks are rather soft. The steering box is somewhat stiff, and causes the car to track poorly. While there is some work which the new owner may want to do, the most costly items (engine and transaxle) appear to be in excellent health.

With this car comes documentation and records from new including the original bill of sale, the Tessera di Garanzia for this chassis, the original white Ferrari key, a reprinted owner`s manual, an original spare parts book, the spare Borrani wire wheel with tire, the hammer, original tool roll with tools, jack, and original jack bag.

Widely regarded to be one of the best driving and most usable classic Ferraris, the 330 GTC is highly sought after today. These cars are extremely nice to drive, even in today`s traffic, because of the wide torque band provided by the 4 litre V-12 and the tractability and balance that result from the combination of the transaxle and torque tube. Its elegant, understated lines and classic Ferrari layout means that the 330 GTC is finally emerging from years of under appreciation. This particular car is a rare find and will appeal to the enthusiast seeking truth and originality.
