The ‘ BB ’ designation of the Ferrari 512 BB was short for ‘ Berlinetta Boxer, ’ referencing the car ’ s body style and engine layout. Long, sleek and low, Pininfarina penned the lines and Scaglietti executed the bodywork over a lightweight tube frame. The Boxer ’ s horizontally opposed 4.9-litre overhead camshaft V-12 with its four triple- throat Weber carburetors produced a healthy 340bhp. With a 0-100km/h time in the mid-five second range, and a top speed of nearly 280km/h, the Boxer was a worthy successor to the 365 GT/4 BB and an admirable competitor to Lamborghini ’ s new Countach.

The 1981 Ferrari 512 BB presented here is one of the last carbureted models built. Finished in red over black, it is a highly original example. It was delivered new to its first owner in France and has remained under French ownership until now. Accordingly, it has had its VAT paid. The odometer indicates 17,780 kms, which is believed to be accurate as it coincides with the overall condition of the vehicle, however it has not been verified. The exterior paint is very impressive, it is believed to be original and as such it displays some minor imperfections in the finish, but otherwise remains very well preserved.

The interior is upholstered in tan with black inserts on the seats, the carpet is red and the dash is black. The condition of the interior is excellent overall, showing wear as would be expected of a well-cared-for, low mileage original. Housed in the glove compartment are all the original books, which include the manual, service book, warranty book and dealer directory, as well as various invoices for periodical maintenance The last service recorded in the service book itself is dated 1981 at only 3,100 kms. The Ferrari also comes with its complete original tool kit in its original box, as well as the jack and jacking accessories in their original sleeve.

On a recent test drive, the Berlinetta Boxer performed without fault; further emphasizing its status as a low mileage, well cared for Ferrari. It is uncommon to see the original Michelin XWX TRX tires on 512 BBs and it is not unreasonable to believe that the set currently fitted on this car are its original four. Recently treated to a comprehensive mechanical inspection and service, as well as a thorough detailing, the 512 BB presented here is ready for anything.

Time and lack of maintenance have steadily reduced the number of good original 512 Berlinetta Boxers remaining, making the chance to buy a wonderful, well maintained example such as this, both increasingly rare and correspondingly more desirable.
