Introduced in Europe in 1987, Ferrari ’ s new supercar was a shock to the senses. An engineering tour de force, the F40 combined raw-edged radical styling with state of the art technology in engine, body, and chassis design.

Without question, driving an F40 is a visceral experience, hammering the senses with brutal acceleration, go-kart quick reflexes, and a howling exhaust note that for many aficionados is music to the ears. The experience is addictive, a powerful narcotic for the soul of a driver.

More than anything, it is the car ’ s purity of purpose that underlines the experience. Few concessions are made to creature comforts – no radio, no carpets, no power windows, not even door panels. Instead, racing seats with red Nomex covers clarify the point which is, of course, absolute, uncompromising performance.

Cost-no-object engineering produced specifications that still seem state of the art today, more than 14 years later – such as the carbon fiber and Kevlar reinforced steel space frame chassis with composite body panels. The car ’ s Evoluzione twin turbo and intercooled four cam port injected V-8 engine is controlled by a race proven Weber-Marelli engine management system.

Formula-One sized wheels and tires benefit from tremendous wind tunnel induced down force. Few cars today can match its 320km/h top speed or its zero to sixty time reported in the three second range.

Although the F40 was introduced in Europe in 1987, Americans had to wait until 1990 for a chance to own one. Demand was so strong that when U.S. specification cars did become available, they immediately traded for hundreds of thousands of dollars above their list price of almost half a million after luxury tax. Over three years, just 213 U.S. specification cars were built.

This exceptional two-owner example has covered just 25,694 kilometers since new. It is factory fitted with catalysts, adjustable suspension and four-point safety harness. Unlike many other F40s on the market today, this example hasn ’ t suffered the abuse of racing, as so many others have. It is in remarkable original condition; the paintwork, while not perfect, displays small chips and other minor flaws consistent with its age.

This Ferrari has a full factory service history that is completely up to date. Prior to the sale, the vendor submitted the car for a comprehensive service and full tune-up, including replacement of all fluids. A recent road test revealed that all systems are working as expected.

With fewer than 26,000 kilometers from new and properly serviced, this example is ready for whatever its next owner desires, whether it be to show and preserve - or drive flat out.
