The 230SL began production in 1963 as a replacement for both the 190SL and the 300SL. The car greatly exceeded the comfort and ease of handling of the former while nearly matching the performance of the latter. Current owners of these cars find service and maintenance easy as the mechanical components are shared with some of the Mercedes sedans of the era.

Collectors like these early 113s for the clean elegance of the original Paul Bracq design, devoid of add-ons like side marker lights, bumper guards, and non-glare metal in the interior. The square-weave carpet, supportive seats, chrome touches, and high-revving camshaft all suggest a sportier car than the later 280SL.

Our 230SL comes to us from the son of the first owner. This family car was completely restored over a five-year period, with completion in 2002. The car was stripped completely to the bare frame. Every mechanical component was inspected, rebuilt and refinished off the car while the body was trued, metal-finished, and painted. 300SL specialist Dave Twitchell was the general contractor and engine rebuilder, while the body and paint were done by the late Al Poskus. The original Blaupunkt Frankfort-US radio was restored.

The car is show quality in, out, and underneath. Factory inspection dots were applied as original. Over $100,000 was spent making this 230SL as close to perfect as possible.

During the restoration, the original 3.89:1 rear axle ratio was replaced with a taller 3.27:1 for more relaxed highway cruising. Newer MB shoulder harnesses were installed. A new set of European headlights was installed, honoring the original Paul Bracq design. The unrestored hard top is available. Since completion a few hundred miles have been put on the car, mostly for sorting out.

Documentation includes owner's books, jack, tools, original 1967 dealer invoice, service records, restoration records.

Own a matching numbers, thoroughly documented, concours-quality classic for half the cost of restoring one.
