To mark its 50th anniversary in 1953, General Motors scored a hat trick by simultaneously introducing the Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Fiesta, and Cadillac Eldorado – three cars intended to showcase the capabilities of American forward-thinking luxury. The rich heritage of Cadillac coupled with the trendsetting design of its Eldorado proved to be an unbeatable combination, and the golden Cadillac quickly became one of the most desirable cars in America. In 1957 the Series 62 Eldorado was available in two- and four-door Seville Hardtop and Biarritz Convertible variants. Befitting the space-age design of the 1950s, and Cadillac in particular, these Eldorado Special models featured extravagant pointed fins alongside unique “chipmunk cheek” rear quarter panels. With only 1,800 produced at a base price of $7,286 each, the extravagant Biarritz Convertibles were stunningly attractive and quite rare.

The 1957 Eldorado Biarritz Convertible offered here is among the finest examples available, as its highly professional restoration has been lauded by numerous judges. In addition to its first place award at the 1998 AACA meet in Hershey, Pennsylvania, this stunning Eldorado received Best in Show honors from the Cadillac LaSalle Club, the Cadillac Nationals in 1999, and again in 2000 after it was acquired by Mr. McMullen.

The restoration is show-quality in every regard and properly executed down to the smallest detail. A Biarritz with red paint of this caliber, professionally applied and virtually flawless, is a rare find indeed. The fit of the body and white vinyl convertible top are both very good and are coupled nicely with well-maintained and show-quality chrome and stainless. Meanwhile, four Saber-style wheels, shod in B.F. Goodrich whitewalls, add an aggressive stance and are complemented by an identical spare in the trunk. Moreover, the glass on the car, from the rear windshield to the side vent windows, is new in appearance and free of any imperfections.

The interior of this car features red and white leather and, like the exterior, reflects the professionalism and dedication to perfection of this restoration. Every element, from the beautiful upholstery to the side panels, dash pad, carpeting, and steering wheel has a brand-new appearance with no defects, rips, or tears and showcases Cadillac at its best. As with the exterior, the re-plated chrome components add an indescribable feel of 1950s elegance.

Contributing to its rarity and value is an optional dual four-barrel carburetor setup producing 325 horsepower. The powerful V8 sits amid a refinished engine compartment that is restored to show quality. Every component, down to the gold “Batwing” air cleaner, is nicely detailed and has the correct markings, paint, and decals. The same can be said for the trunk, which has been properly restored and maintained. In fact, practically all special features, many of which were standard, are in excellent condition. This particular Eldorado is equipped with air conditioning, windshield washers, dual mirrors, as well as power steering, breaks, seats, windows, and antenna.

Appropriately named after the Basque resort town, the Biarritz Convertible was and is ideal for the enthusiast who enjoys a leisurely top-down cruise in grand luxury. Meanwhile, and despite is enormous proportions, the Biarritz’s design was intended to evoke a sense of space flight common among American autos in the 1950s. Combined, these qualities of European distinction and classic Cadillac luxury produced a car of timeless beauty that is just as collectible today as it was a half century ago.
