Introduced in 1927, the Model A dispelled any thought that Ford had peaked with the Model T. A worthy successor to the Tin Lizzy, the Model A provided customers with refined operation, better reliability, greater performance and bodies that offered better year-round weather protection. Along with these changes, the two-door body styles achieved ascendancy by 1931, the last year of Model A production. Roadsters outnumbered phaetons, coupes outnumbered roadsters and Tudor sedans outnumbered everything.

Even heading into the depths of the Great Depression, optimism and self-reliance put a guy and his gal into a two-seat Roadster with room for a couple of kids or a pair of kindred spirits in the rumble seat. With a price tag under $500, even with Deluxe trim and accessories, the Model A Roadster was within reach of a modestly successful tradesman, farmer or clerk.

The 1931 Ford Model A Roadster presented here was added to the McMullen Collection in the mid-nineties, very shortly after it had completed a full concours quality restoration. Mr. McMullen had been attracted to this vehicle not only because the quality of restoration was outstanding, but also because he was highly impressed by the degree to which the car adhered to factory correctness.

The Model A is finished in period correct Ford colors, dark blue with black fenders, a lighter blue beltline and straw colored wheels and pin stripes. The canvas top and tobacco colored interior are still in as-new condition, however the paint and chrome, although still quite presentable, are beginning to show minor signs of aging. The engine, bay and undercarriage have all been detailed and are correct in their presentation.

Complete with a full array of proper Model A accessories, the Roadster has six whitewall tires including the dual side-mounts fitted with mirrors, as well as a radiator stone guard, wind wings, dual cowl lights, headlight eyebrows, a rear mounted luggage rack and a quail mascot radiator cap.

Having never been shown and only exercised to maintain its proper running and driving condition, this well appointed Model A Roadster is a premiere example with everything an enthusiast could want.
