Like most cars immediately after World War II, 1946-1948 Pontiacs were slight reincarnations of the 1942 models in terms of both styling and engineering. They were still good cars, but it wasn’t until 1949 that Pontiac had anything fresh to offer. During 1949, the company built the three-millionth Pontiac made since the marque was introduced in 1926.

Extensive research by the Pontiac-Oakland Club, Mr. McMullen and RM Auctions returns no other record of another 1949 Pontiac Sedan Delivery in existence. There are no build records with this car, but John Gunnell’s Standard Catalog of American cars includes a photograph of Pontiac General Manager, Harry J. Klinger, posed with a 1949 Pontiac sedan delivery - proving that at least one was built.

The example presented here was purchased by Mr. McMullen in 1995. Although it was in very solid condition, Mr. McMullen immediately sent this rare delivery model to Florida for restoration by Silver Dollar Restorations. During restoration the body was not taken off of the frame. During the restoration, the craftsmen removed all chrome and bright work and sent the pieces out for refinishing or re-plating. The windows were removed and all body panels and gaps were carefully checked for consistency. Every detail received thorough attention especially the application of a show quality maroon paint job that remains in excellent condition today. A full interior restoration was carried out as well. Driver and passenger sit high in gray vinyl bucket seats that match the door panels. A new rubber floor cover was installed and the metal dash is finished in a charcoal gray paint color. The entire roof is insulated by expertly installed gray mole hair. The delivery end of the sedan has been fitted with a full-length pebble grain rubber floor mat while the sidewalls and wheel wells have been upholstered in a gray vinyl. Some signs of age are present in a few hairline crack in the steering wheel, some dull brightwork on the dash and the plastic gauge covers.
