Developed from the fabulous 300SLR road racers, the 300SL set the standard for high performance sports cars in the mid-Fifties. Its intricate multi-tube frame was adopted to give the suspension the stiffest possible base, its high, triangulated sides dictating the roof-hinged doors which gave it its distinctive appearance and nickname. The single overhead camshaft inline six-cylinder engine employed groundbreaking Bosch mechanically timed fuel injection. Fully independent suspension gave superior roadholding. Recognized at the time as a milestone, the 300SL Gullwing has been a highly regarded collector car since it was introduced. Restored over a decade ago, this 1954 300SL is only the 32nd of its type built in this, the first year of production. It shows little use since restoration and has been carefully maintained in essentially showroom condition with excellent silver paint, red leather upholstery and tan fitted luggage as well as a set of racing style lap belts. It runs and drives as a Gullwing should and needs nothing to be used and enjoyed as a beautifully presented car on tours and events where its 240hp and excellent suspension will continue to satisfy the most discriminating drivers.
