Packard was at the pinnacle of American luxury automobile manufacturers in the years leading up to America's entry into World War I. Despite devoting increased engineering and management effort to war related production, including design and engineering of the Liberty aircraft engine, Packard continued to improve its line of sixes in two series, the 38, making 65 horsepower from 415 cubic inches and the larger 48 with 525 cubic inches and 82hp. The 38 came in an impressive twenty-four different cataloged body styles and its power was sufficient to propel even elaborately equipped formal coachwork from 0-60 in thirty seconds or less. This example carries Packard limousine coachwork from an earlier Packard chassis with fixed roof over the front seat and rollup side curtains for the driver's and attendant's weather protection. It has been restored while preserving the original blue cord upholstery and trim in the rear compartment, then carefully maintained and toured in recent years. It has been featured in the book "Packards of the Goggles and Gauntlets Era" and is exceptionally well equiped including Twin Beam headlights, a Bosch electric system control panel mounted on the steering column, Warner speedometer/clock combination, cowl lights, cowl mounted horn. Finished in Black with Blue panels on the elaborate coachwork, the front seat is upholstered in black leather while the fortunate rear compartment passengers are coddled in blue cord. Sitting behind a dropdown divider and protected by similar dropdown windows, they enjoy flower vases, a robe rail, jump seats, an umbrella holder with umbrella, rollup shades on all the windows and a speaking tube to communicate with the chauffeur. The blue wood spoke wheels carry 36 x 4 1/2" blackwall tires. It is a huge, tall, formal automobile and is redolent of Packard's quality, exclusivity and luxury. It awaits the opportunity to be driven and enjoyed.
