In 1979, Pontiac celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Trans Am by creating a truly special edition based on their second-generation design. It was painted silver and charcoal two-tone that was complimented by red, silver and charcoal stripes. On the hood, the biggest bird ever to be fitted to a T/A was included. So large was the bird that the wing tips were a separate decal fitted to the fenders. A new “turbine” smooth, brightly polished dished aluminum wheel was specific to the anniversary edition as were new Firebird decals placed on the B-pillars replacing the metal emblems affixed to standard Trans Ams.

The interior was treated to more luxury and thought than any previous Trans Am. The color scheme from the exterior was naturally applied to the interior. Most items were finished in a light gray/silver hue, including the steering wheel. A new seat was designed and covered in silver leather with some vinyl accents. When Pontiac designers were insistent about producing an embroidered bird with six different colors, a special machine was imported from France to do the sewing. Even though few (if any) Trans Am buyers were worried about road and engine noise, the anniversary model has specially designed carpets to reduce these sounds. Options included (and most were fitted) with mirrored T-tops, power windows, power door locks, remote trunk opener, and the WS6 Special Performance Package (upgraded brakes and handling). Cars ordered with an automatic transmission were fitted with the 403 cubic inch Oldsmobile V8 engine and models with a four-speed received the 400 cubic inch Pontiac engine. The cars were a huge success and 7,500 were sold before Pontiac pulled the plug.

The example presented here was ordered new by Charlie Harris Pontiac in Clearwater, Florida. They elected not to sell the car and instead put it in storage at the dealership. When Mr. McMullen purchased that dealership some years later, this brand-new, never sold Anniversary model came with it. It is in as-new condition and the odometer shows just 38 miles. It is highly optioned with the 403 cubic inch V8 engine mated to the more popular automatic transmission. Adorning the roof are the optional mirrored T-top removable roof panels. The original paint and interior are holding up well and are free from defect, however the windshield has started to delaminate in the lower corners.
