Nothing embodies the go-anywhere spirit better than the Volkswagen Microbus and perhaps this is one of the reasons Jamie used his van for the TV show 'Great Italian Escape'. The sunroof deluxe model is the most desirable model and featured additional eight small skylight windows and is, accordingly, the 23-window as offered here.

This particular example, a rare right hand drive version was manufactured on 8th June 1959 and left the factory the following day. The van was laid up to rest in 1979 and was restored including a complete stripping and welding of the chassis by marque specialists The Beetle Clinic in 1996.

After a year of school food, Jamie Oliver wanted to re-ignite his passion for cooking by escaping to Italy in his camper van, looking for inspiration off the beaten track.

The TV series was aired in autumn 2005 with the van featuring heavily in the 6 episodes with a specially-built trailer kitchen (offered as the next lot) on the back of it so he could cook wherever he pitched up.

The van also featured on an episode of Top Gear with the van driven around the test track with Jamie trying to prepare a salad in the back.

Jamie slept in the van throughout his Italian trip and has added some features to make the experience a little more comfortable including Cath Kidston curtains, a Sony PlayStation 2, Sat Nav, 2 TV monitors that drop down from the roof and a DVD player. The interior was trimmed by leading VW coach trimmer Bernard Newbury.

The mechanicals were also upgraded to Jamie's specifications for the Italian trip. Installed is a 2.4 litre VW/Porsche 914 spec engine with Porsche style cooling system. The gearbox was recently overhauled by VW specialists who were flown out to Italy with a complete gearbox and tools in their hand luggage and re-conditioned the 'box in a baker's car park under an olive tree!

The brakes have been up-graded with servo-assistance and are very effective with discs up-front and new drum assemblies at the rear. The van has been lowered and stiffened and now sits on Fuch alloys.

Offered to Coys direct from Jamie himself, the car is described as being in 'splendid' condition throughout. With the dashboard signed by Jamie this is a unique opportunity to purchase the most recognizable and a rare right hand drive 23 window Sambas from one of the worlds top chefs.
